He might mean that shared waters can be called whatever you want them to be called.
Like the Gulf states call the Persian gulf the Arabian gulf, like we call La Manche the English channel.
It's no big deal except in the eyes of the lefty's.

Last full day of the cruise today. A full sea day so just resting. Popped the cork on our complimentary bottle of bubbles, sat on the balcony and watched the world go by.
Being suite passengers, we had White company products everywhere - in the bath, in the shower and in the toilet/washbasin area. We also had a box of white company products. I said they were coming home with us, Mrs Mottie said they belonged to the suite. We'd been bickering all week about this. Anyway, I asked our butler and he said that they were a gift from P&O so they are ours to take. Oh, she’s over the bloody moon now!
Another thing we have been 'having words' about is her insistence on clearing up before the cabin steward comes in to clean the room! I just let her get on with it but every morning he asks us if there is anything he can do for us but Mrs Mottie has forbidden me to ask him for a list of what sort of things he could do for us. She’s just not getting this master and servant malarkey.
