Hi guys

Just got a quote in from a company to supply and fit a new Worcester greenstar 28i junior boiler.

Its not a straight swap , the old boiler is in the cupboard in the kitchen and we want the new boiler to be outside the cupboard, its only moving left by 3ft.

we originally wanted it in the loft and was quoted £2300, we changed our plans to keeping in the kitchen and the new quote is £2200, we though it would have came down a bit more than £100.

Here is what is on the quote to give you an idea of what there quoting for.

To remove existing boiler from cupboard. To supply and install Worcester Greenstar 28I Junior Condensing Combination Boilercomplete with horizontal flue and fascia digital programmer in the kitchen. to re-route pipework from stopcock to boiler. To connect new boiler to the existing system. To input inhibitor into system on completion. To upgrade gas supply to boiler posistion. To supply and install Thermostatic Radiator Valves and Locksield Valves to 6 radiators. To remove redundant materials. Price includes associated materials and labour

For The Sum of £2202.19 including vat.

Now when the guy came in to do the quote he never mentioned the need for new trv's or lockshield valves, all the ones we have work fine so why do we need these??

so does this sound about right??

also is there anyone on here that's from the Falkirk region in Scotland that can recommend any other company's we can try..

Cheers

Kev

Doesn't sound overpriced, let's put it that way.

But do you know the installer? Was he recommended to you?

If not, you can't be sure you will get the job done right.

No don't know the installer, the wife picked them out of the yellow pages one day while i was at work.

They are the only ones out of half a dozen that has came back to us, 1 other came out to look, when we hadn't heard from him we phoned to see why we hadn't gotten a quote from him, he said he had left it on our answering machine which he didn't, he said he would send us it out but that never came ether, the other 4 didn't even bother to come out.

We told all of them that the kitchen will just be a bare shell, kind of thought that would be a job most would be happy with seeing as there wouldn't be anything in the way, plus the original plumbing is only 15" away from where we want the new boiler.

I'm going to phone round another few places tomorrow.

Cheers

Boiler alone is just a shade over £850.Personally I would pay the extra and go for a 37CDI ,your talking another £250 but a far better boiler with better flow rates on the hot water.

Guy is just covering his back with the valves but that is good practice anyway to replace the old valves.

I would also sling the quoted for programmer and go for a wireless programmable room stat, a Honeywell ,Drayton or Siemens.Any of the above is around the £100 mark ex fitting.

Quote seems decent BTW.

These are the busiest months in the year, which is probably why most installers did not get back to you yet. To be honest with you and no disrespect but this is based on experience, when wifey calls to get some quotes, you are 90% sure to waste your time. Most of us will average coming home somewhere around 9 at night, so when in doubt, we don’t bother.
Make sure the installer knows you mean business and do not start your call with: “can you give me a quote”. If you want a decent installation, it is going to cost. 15 years for 3k is a damn sight cheaper than 5 years for 2k.
Be nice, be kind, be easy; it helps. I remember the people who made me real, fresh coffee. I also remember those who wanted me out the door as quick as possible because they were watching the match or corrie.

It could be coincidence, but I have yet to find the first Worcester I-junior series that was installed correctly.
It is just about the cheapest boiler made by W.B. and a favourite of poor quality installers.
Like Tony mentioned, the work is the same and to change to a top quality all singing and dancing model that is 50% more powerful, changes the quote from 2200 to 2400 or maybe 2500.
The junior seems to be used by people who use a good name and then take the cheapest model and cut corners on the job to make maximum profit.
You are far better off asking friends and neighbours for a good installer who is local, than choosing taking the only one from the yellow pages who got back to you.

Lot of good point wells made there BGM however I'm genuinely interested in the poor installation point vs these boliers in particular.

Care to expand, for future reference like.

Thanks,

Tony.

So would I. You need a couple more quotes.

I've just done a very similar job in a flat for my dentist. He gave me the keys and went on hol for a week. I've just about done the job and haven't decided how much to bill him. I'll have to go up a ladder to fix a few things, which will push the bill up to £1650 probably. This is Kingston, just SW of London As it happens the system was clean, but it would have been extra if I'd had to spend hours flushing it.

No mention of flushing the system = bad news. That's the most important part of the installation quality.

Whether the Junior is a good choice I'm not sure. People like the Bosch name, and they're smallish. Come back in 5 years and we'll be able to say if they're good or not. But the customer service from WB is better than most.

Not that good for the Junior RI. Have you tried to remove the baffle design to clean them? Forget it, lol. Im decommissioning a 2 year old one as soon as the cold weather is over because I can see future servicing is going to be a 'mare. Also for some reason it occasionally goes into service mode which makes it run at full tilt

Chris, I forsee this one will soon be on your skip ;)

I think it is a bit cheap overall. I would be looking at £2300 + VAT for a standard install, loft a bit more especially if vertical flue needed.

I have a suspicion you may be right.

I admit I just put one in. Reasons :

It fitted.
The guy likes the Bosch name
I can lift the thing without giving myself another hernia.

But I really get p'd off again, by
no tails supplied
front flappy down panel drops off for a pastime
Standard flue is too short
Those cable grips don't come out without a struggle
Stupid fixed hole the condensate pipe has to go through
Stupid tatty screws on TOP you need to access to get the case off
They come with about a LITRE of water in them
The PRV is right at the back so unless you leave gaps between the tails you can't reach it.
No HW temp control
No diagnostics

At least it has a REAL pressure gauge with actual numbers on.

Would I have one? No way. Heat exchanger material/servicing puts me right off.

Maybe we need to start a new skip:

thanks for all the replys guys.

The reason we were going for the junior series was due to size, it only has a depth of 330mm which is about all the room we have for it.

also we only have 2 sinks, 1 shower and 6 rads, i thought the 28i would be more than up to the job, the guy that gave us the quote said that the 24i would have done but its always best to get a boiler that has a little more omph than you need so he recommended the 28i, they were also giving a 5 year warranty with it.

as i can see the junior series isn't liked very much on here, what other small boilers would you recommend??

please bare in mind that it has to be small 340mm max depth, like most first time buyers we have a low budget so the cheaper the better.

Vaillant Ecotec Plus 831, 320mm deep, 440 wide and 720 high, in a totally differnt class ;)

Hmmm.. I'm sorry but I think that the Junior i is a cracking little boiler and I will offer them when money is at a premium for the customer.. When I know that I'm up against Mr B&Q fitter.. I see them as buying a decent quality piece of kit but without all the whistles and bells... same guts inside as the others just less fussy bits.. Piece of cake to fit and do a really nice job.. Never had a problem with the flap and the RF programmable stats make fitting a cinch.. Heat exchangers don't need to be stripped every service and are simple enough though you will need a seal pack if you do

Had a guy out today to give us a quote and he was recommending the Vailiant ecotec plus 824, having read the specs on it i would have thought the 831 would have been the better choice.

it will be running 1 kitchen sink, 1 bathroom sink , 6 rads and 1 thermostatic shower, would the 824 be enough?

i see that the junior doesn't have hot water temp control, that puts me of it a bit tbh.

thanks again guys.

Kev

Possibly as you only have a shower rather than a bath.

Personally I would go for the 831 as long as you have the flow rate.

Both will be more than enough for your heating and can be range rated down to suit.
