Afternoon all

Were in the process of gathering quotes from local firms to replace our old back boiler, gas fire and hearth for a combi boiler and a couple of new radiators.

As a background we live in a normal sized 1970 3 bedroom semi, 1 bathroom with electric shower and with a 7 radiator system. We have had two quotes for the work, the first one included a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30si boiler with 5 year warranty and the second one included a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 28i Junior boiler with 2 year warranty. The 1st quote is 1300 pounds more than the 2nd quote. My questions are as follows:

Firstly do both boiler versions sound about right for the work they will be doing? Should they be able to cope with the size of house and system they are being fitted to? Are they reliable boilers?

Secondly does the first quote boilers extra power warrant paying the extra 1300 pounds?

Many thanks in advance

Why do you want a combi boiler?

Either boiler will be more than adequate for the central heating. Which one is more suitable for the Hot Water will depend on your cold water flow rate. You can measure this at the cold tap in the kitchen using a bucket and watch. You need 2.5kW for every litre per minute.

The "junior" versions are budget boilers and have fewer features as well as a shorter warranty.

DH asked the question, why a combi? They are not the only solution.A heat only boiler serving your existing cylinder and rads with a controls upgrade should also be considered.

No the differences between the boilers don't merit the difference between the price. The price difference is caused by one installer being accredited so he can offer a longer warranty, possibly by being a bigger company more likely to be around next year when something goes wrong, maybe for more work such as a power flush, and perhaps by increased profit margin for salesman and so forth.
