Hello All,

This is my first post thread.

A while ago i had a so called trades man come cowbow install a light fitting into my loft and the way he has done it is NOT to code.

He fitted the cable to the landing light via the loft to a different switch in the loft that he has put in so when i want the light on in the loft i have to turn the landing light on so what i would like to do is make it so it's a new install and it's not dependant on any other power being turned on for it to work.

So is it just a matter of making the new switch from the loop? As being only a pat tester this is a different ball game

Yes, you need to wire the feed to the new switch in the loft to the lighting circuit permanant live, not switched live.I am assuming that there is not one at the landing light as I'm sure he would have used this.You will have to pick up from another light or JB into one of the upstairs lighting feed cables.
Remember to isolate!

It's done there was all the right connections on the landing light i fed it from the loop live to the switch and sw'e live to the light and it works perfect.

Not always, Rice, some people would install it off the switchwire of the hall fitting so as to vastly minimise the potenial increase in electricity bills should someone leave the light on in the loft!

Nothing you describe sounds unreasonable to me.

He was here for 2hrs boxed it off and said "it was the best i could do" and when i checked (almost a year later) to see if there was anything i could do to change it he had the + and - to the bulb cable not directly to the 1's he should of had it connected to

this is a common way of doing it aparently.. it means you don't leave the loft light on all the time should you forget to turn it off..

it does mean however that if you left the loft light on, it would come on every time you turned the landing light on..

it also means that if you're up the loft and the missus or someone comes in and think's you've left the landing light on by mistake, you'll be plunged into darkness when they turn it off..

What was the feed? A bettery?

What makes you say this?

OK He should have given you the option of independant or dependant switching.

I often climb into lofts and find lights that have been running for weeks/months. His arrangement helps prevent this from happening and is quite common
