Hi all,

Newbie here so hello to all

Is it OK to site a new condensing gas boiler in the side loft - exhaust through a roof vent and drain into soil stack ?

Also any recommendations re. decent make and model - to supply megaflow system in 5 bed semi

Cheers

steve

Siting a boiler in a loft space is fine as long as long as you are using a room sealed appliance. If its atmospheric boiler then you are opening a whole different can of worms regarding interlocks on hatches and fire doors etc!!!

There are still a few precautions to fitting in a loft space with a room sealed appliance though:

Ensure that there is adequate frost protection, most boilers have this inbuilt but may require an external frost stat. Also remember lagging is your friend.

Ensure that all surfaces are the recommended distances from any combustible surfaces.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ensure that there is adequate room and adequate access and lighting for routine servicing and maintenance!!!!

Ensure that vertical flue arrangement meets or exceeds gas regs and does not interfere with neighbours etc.

A filling loop and additional pressure gauge somewhere accessible without having to access the loft is also a good idea!! (trust me!!)

A drain to soil stack is fine but again remember that frost protection should be provided so that it does not become blocked due to freezing

This is not an extensive list and there is probably something that i have forgot!! I'm not getting paid for this so...... lol

The boiler size is dictated by your system requirements. More info would be needed to spec a boiler. Size of megaflo unit, number of rads, sizes etc its hard to tell without seeing the job or having a lot more info.

Also if the 5 bed semi has a floor space larger than 150m2 then zone valves will be required to meet Part L

Without seeing your property I would say at least 18Kw, probably 24Kw and range rate it down.

As for good makes, search FAQs there is a good post in there on different boilers.

thanks chaps. Side loft is big, boarded and well lit so should be OK

Will be getting someone qualified to do the work but its good to know the plan is feasible !

Anyone familiar with the Megaflow Solar cylinders. They have a quoted diameter of 552mm which will fit through the loft door OK - but does anyone know if they have any knobbly bits on top of this diameter. The doorway is 60cm wide ...

* A permanent light needs to be there lighting up the whole area from hatch to boiler.
* Boarded from a hatch to boiler.
* A permanent ladder (can be sheet down).
* A hatch rail if boiler near the hatch.
* Not in a position where items can be stored on the boiler.

It will fit through your loft ok. They have threaded connections sticking out but these are only approx 30mm.

The only other bit to stick out is the plastic door over the electrics.

Make sure you have a strong enough platform to sit the megaflo on as when full these will weigh a heck of a lot

The megatech solar cylinder has one of the largest diameter solar coils available so will transfer more heat than most of the competition.
