surveyor or builder ? help please

A surveyor can tell you if it's load-bearing, will not able to do (sensible 
) calculations if it needs structural support, but will labour under a misapprehension that two weeks of structural theory lessons means that he can; a structural engineer can tell you if it's load-bearing and do any calculations required; a builder can tell you if it's load-bearing, can't do the calculations, can take a stab at what might be required and probably be right more times than not - unless it's EffEnnTee you ask, of course 
If you're really cute*, you could of course post some pix on here and get loads of totally free advice...often conflicting, but with the best of intentions, naturally

have you been up in the attic and had a look yourself
even if the joists arnt joined in the attic the wall may be breaking up the span
is there any joists spanning the full width without crossing the wall!!!

.Rule of thumb: for every joist you cut out to form the increased hatch width, replace it to the sides of the opening eg if you cut two, put one full span joist next to the existing joist on either side (trimming joists). To support the ones that have been cut (trimmed joists), if it's no more than a 600 opening, a single joist (trimmer joist) spanning between the doubled up ones will be fine.

Great, I've managed to quote myself!
The engineers do the same two weeks worth of lessons on partition wall/joist support and then go off to do 3 years on foundations/soil samples/chemical analysis/re-bar/concrete theory and other equally relevent subjects.
