Thinking of buying a used car for about 20 grand from a main dealer.
How do you normally pay do you offer him cash, for a better deal, bankers draft, cheque or what.
Would a debit card pay that if the money was in the account to cover it.

Why don't you ask him? Would you really want to wander around with 20K? Would he thank you for it if you did? And being a main dealer he's not going to do a tax fiddle is he? Seems to me more of a daydream "I wish I could afford a 20K car".

Not really ,so how do you pay, with all the cars about surely there not all on finance.
my last car was 7 grand and I had to wait for the cheque to clear before taking the car.
I will ask them, but wanted to prepare first, as maybe they could do a better discount if I offered certain payment methods.

I have heard they make so much profit on the overpriced finance deals, especially if they can con you into taking payment protection insurance, that they are not too keen on cash or equivalent.

Direct transfer...? Bankers draft...?

Main dealers are not interested in cash, they earn money on any finance they sell you.

And, due to money laundering regulations, they can only take a max of about £8k in cash these days, anyhow. The days of the pikies and their wads are long gone - no insinuation there, by the way

A bankers draft will cost you extra, just use your debit card, if there is enough money in the account pay on the day you collect car, thats what I did.
OK wasn't quite 20k but it was a fair amount.

I do the same but I also let the bank know of the amount being debited and the date just to ensure things go smoothly

... or bullied.... !!
I made the mistake of buying my latest car from Carcraft.... these salesmen earn obscene money... and are your best friend.... as long as you're buying. And then once you've said yes, they 'force' you to go to this little room where this guy wants to know all about you life, your kids, your holiday... and then asks if you want payment protection...and gets extremely grumpy when you say no !! and then makes you feel like you're wasting his time

I won't make the mistake of going there again !

But back to the OP... surely you should look out for 0% finance?

I went to look at cars at a carcraft type place.

The smarmy young lad came bounding over and was all pally with me, showing me round the place, and mainly at cars which were more expensive than I had told him I was prepared to pay.

After maybe twenty minutes he got round to asking me how I was paying, and more importantly, if I wanted finance.

When I told him I would be paying in full, he said OK and walked off.

How rude. They clearly don't make enough money on their vastly over priced cars, so only seem interested in selling finance to people

I went and spent my 10k with a nice friendly local proper car garage.

It does come to something when many car places advertise their ludicrous credit deals (do you have CCJs? bankrupt? no income? GREAT! we'll give you a loan!), and not the actual cars.
