Hi all

Ive been out and about for the last 6 months doing oil boiler servicing and breakdowns. Ive got a few items in the back of the van which will hopefully get me out of trouble, just wondering what would be considered a minimum stock to hold in the van? Ive not got thousands to spend and appreciate that realistically this is what i need to spend, but its early days at the moment. This is what i have

Nozzles
Danfoss photocell
Danfoss oil pump BFP21L3/BFP21R3/BFP11L
Various oil filters
Riello Capacitor
Flexible hoses
Oil pipe and fittings

I do have a good merchants locally which tends to hold most things, just takes about 30mins round trip to go there and back.

Any help or advice really appreciated from one of the Oil guys out there
Cheers
Andy

A Circulating Pump a TF832 Control Box & Wiring Base a 3-00Mtr Fire Valve would be handy as well a complete oil filter in 1/4" & 3/8" would be usefull

I used to carry a full range of spares for Riello 40, RDB, EOGB and Ecoflam + the usual nozzles filters oil lines, actuators Prv's etc.

Due to the internet and customers constantly complaining about what price they could get the parts for online,I now carry just basic trannys coils etc.
Instead of a one fix visit they get the spares for little more than cost, but pay for my time and trouble picking the spares up and return visit.

Fork them!!

Thanks Terry

I can sympathise with where your coming from as i too have had a customer or two say the same or when im on my way to the merchant google the part and then say it cost this much when the jobs done. I now dont tell them too much just i need to get some spares from the merchant.

Sorry to be a pain, you couldnt tell me what you actually carry so i can get an idea?

cheers

Hi Terry
The only good thing about the Custards getting their own parts is that you do not have to gaurantee them and you can charge them to diagnose and replace a part in gaurantee, which of course you can't if you supplied the part originally, but then thats what the mark up is for
I make sure any of my custards are fully aware of this so they make their choice and take their chance

try hwos.co.uk for your oil spares. next day delivery and free on orders over £180.

I use them a lot as they can be upto half the price of part center and curzons.

i carry 2 of every different 'usual' oil part.

my customers want a '1st time fix' and don't want to be left cold and i don't want the hassle to return visits to fix a pump that costs £50.

One trip fix is best all round. If you have the parts, customer does not have time, or inclination , to google them. You should happily be able to lift cost by 20 - 25% as most suppliers will quote a list, from which trade should be at least 25%. Also be aware that many generic parts cost more as spares from the boiler manufacturer, so a little 'canny' purchasing gives you a little more. e.g. a worcester prv is over double what you pay at B.E.S. for the same item in a Caleffi box.

For my first year I worked on the principle of going and buying the required spare part and also buying 'one for the van'. This meant I ended up with a range of spares which covered most faults.

When I had to give up working through I'll health I had about £3-4000 worth of parts on the van!

It was mainly the most common parts such as nozzles and photocells but also control boxes, ignition transformers, pumps, motors, couplings, filters and also Honeywell valve heads which seemed to be the cause of most boiler failures! I kept a range of parts specific to Aga/Rayburn cookers and Alpha cookers too which were good money earners.

You will soon establish what you need to carry.

Remember you will always keep customers if you've 'got one in the van' rather than having to go and get one.

I used to work for a major oil servicing company, we had a fully stocked van, pretty much everything, from Motor's Oil pump's, Circulation Pumps, P.E.C's, Control boxe's, electrodes (especially inter B9/B11) as they are notorous for cracks, & even a small burner (complete) doesnt matter if it's secondhand....just as a back up
