Can gas pipe develop crack on its own?

Aha - superb! This gets better and better :) Only one profile says this. Apols for misunderstanding!

Most of the replies you've received on this thread have been from gas safe registered engineers.

One thing that occurred to me is this. For a solder joint to leak it is faulty workmanship, so how can you be held accountable for a joint not being made correctly.

just to add my 5p's worth, their first statement is not necessarily correct it's 4mb drop for a U6 meter & 8mb drop for a E6 meter with appliances connected so you need to confirm which meter you had (U6 normally has numbers like a car mileage & E6 is alot smaller with a digital readout), i would ask to see the video evidence that they said they had & then post it up on youtube so we can all see, i would also ask what protection the pipe had (as they did say the pipe was protected, if it was plastic coated then this had to be stripped back to solder the joints so what then was the joints protected with ? if it's hair felt this isn't good enough because as soon as it's plastered that would soak through the hair felt & start the corrosion process

Thanks guys, we're going to hand deliver (demanding a signature) our more streamlined letter tomorrow with this list of questions:

/////////////////////

1. The video of the pressure loss and the point of detecting the leak.

2. Photos of the wall the pipe was attached to prior to the engineer 'breaking it out'.

3. All photos you have from the period immediately prior to our moving in showing the gas cooker supply pipe and its fittings.

4. Evidence of any damage to the fittings/pipe work prior to the wall being broken out.

5. Information regarding precisely what protection the pipe had.

6. A copy of the Gas Safe engineer’s itemised invoice.

/////////////////////

Shall of course post the video on youtube and keep you posted of the response we get

See what you get but only the invoice is likely to be of much use to us.

If it went to court they would have to disclose what info they have. Thats in theory but I would wonder if even 50% of the information is ever disclosed!

Is mine the only profile to say Gas Reg?

Tony

We were there under license, not as tennants, and as such had a lot less rights.

Incidentally, we hand delivered our letter to the boss yesterday. He informed us they might CHARGE us for the requested photos and video (after he'd first denied the video even existed). Cheek! I asked him to ask us first

I have uploaded scans of the reply letter, photos of the pipe and fitting and Gas Safe engineer's invoice that we received from the HA today.

The HA has offered to waive the £187.50 if we stop asking for our £100 incentive. I'm inclined to keep arguing, but am open to suggestions. We've not, for example, criticised the Gas safe engineer's time wasting technique of locating the leak or gone into very much detail about why we couldn't have caused the leak by moving an electric cooker out. (All we said wasIf an engineer/contractor, whether employed by yourselves or a former licensee, carried out work in the aforementioned premises and left a situation in which we could cause damage to a gas fitting by simply removing an electric cooker, then it is our informed opinion that these works contravene the Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations (GSIUR1998) and, therefore, we will vigorously challenge your withholding our £100 incentive. We do not and will not accept that we could have caused any escape of gas. For a solder joint to leak it is faulty workmanship, so we cannot be held accountable for a joint not being made correctly. If any escape of gas did occur, then it cannot in any way be accredited to us.)

We notice that our lazy HouseLet Officer didn't even bother to visit the house after we moved out, but had passed us anyway.

We have bought a memory stick to get a copy of the video after the weekend. The photos of the pipe and fittings provided are of very bad quality (I'm attaching them anyway) - is it worth seeing if colour vfersions of these can also be loaded onto the memory stick?

well in my view even hitting the pipe taking out your cooker wouldn't have caused that leak unless the elbow wasn't soldered correctly or was corroded, i can't see any protection on the elbow in the wall, i bet the ptfe tape on the baynot fitting isn't gas approved either, nice big dent in the pipe in pic 3 as well, the thing that makes me really suspicious is the pics & video, i don't know any RGI or BG that are called to a gas leak & then takes pics & video of before & after why did they do that unless they were trying to pull the wool over someones eyes
