what ever happened to Ryobi they used to make the coolest tools ever years ago they had portable mortice machines chisel or chain and one of the first to bring out a mangle or better known as portable thicknesser and a really ace big 1/2" router with big handles that stayed on the market for a long time I was lucky enough to but one before they disapeared

They've not long dropped the mortiser, although Makita still make theirs. I can remember when all that type of machine were German; Mafell, Festo, Elu, Haffner, etc - they were all at it. You're right about models disappearing - Ryobi only offer the 1400 watt router on their European web site now, although it's a recent thing because the 1/2in ERT2100, which is still listed iby a few places and continues to be available in the USA. In the meantime the old RE-601 has changed colour to orange and been rebadged as the AEG OF2050, although why anyone would actually pay over £270 for a warmed-over 20 odd year old design made in China is beyond me (sorry, not a fan, and they were one of the cheapest 1/2in routers on the market at one time - always £40 or so under the price of a DW)

Maybe it's down to some sort of repositioning in the market and they intend imn the future to have Ryobi as the hobby brand, AEG as the trade brand and Milwaukee as their top dollar industrial brand. In which case the mortiser and thicknesser may yet reappear in a different colour sporting a new makers badge

Yeh I think your right about the Ryobi ,whilst I like the styling of the big handles makes it easy to use ,my old 177e will knock into a cocked hat on all fronts but it is great to use as inverted router used as a spindle because it has a really good reach especially if you cut the gaters off I hardly ever have to resort to a collet extension ,ironically never using the handles, what a waste

I like Ryobi, got a fantastic impact driver and good jig saw of theirs and they'e beasts.

They don't seem to be doing much in the professional market like Makita or Paslode but at B&Q etc they're about.
