Why the obsession with installing it yourself anyway? If it's installed by someone else then you have come back if it goes wrong. Self install you'll end up paying unless you can prove it's a manufacturing defect.

It seems a simple system and looking at reviews quite reliable, but I would like to see actual numbers when pushing the comfort button like 22, 23 degrees etc

Well firstly the price, as some need to be wired into the boiler, when others like this you just wire it into old thermostat

Hive is £199 installed. Not matter what. It's fixed price.

I have a heatmiser at home the neo is a really nice bit of kit. We also install losts of Nests, they are a really nice product but is more of a geeky thing. Sounds like you just need the functionality. In which case I would go with Heatmiser or Honeywell Evohome. Hive is tat, salus forget it. The owl stuff looks good but new company so who knows about reliability.
 
Why do some units have a unit hard wired into boiler and thermostat, and some just need the thermostat wired up,
 
Some have a unit hard wired to the boiler to enable a wireless room sensor, instead of a hard wired stat
