Hi,

Looking to replace my existing exterior security light with an energy efficient LED one, such as the one below:

http://www.beamled.com/50w-biard-le...-sensor.html?gclid=CIG-i5WS_cECFU2WtAodzm8AxQ

Looking at the manual of this one and some other LED lights on ebay, these LED lights look to be pre-wired, maybe half a metre or so.

The current light has a spur taken from the FCU for the bathroom, then to the light with 1.5mm twin and earth cable. Given these are pre-wired, do these need joining in an exterior junction box?

Thanks

Yes most of these new LED floodlights seem to be prewired. Best bet is have an external waterproof joint box nex to the light and connect into that.

On an aside, I recently fitted some with a Built in PIR and the flex is only 3 core. A 4 core would have been so much nicer to drive other lights from the same PIR. I wonder why the manufacturers haven't done this..?

Thanks for the reply.

What sort of joint box would be best suited to this?

Ive found using a Galv Conduit 1way/stop end box easiest with a stuffing gland to take the pre wired flex.

You will have to drill the back of the box out though and finish it off with a gasket and box lid.

Why are these things pre-wired?

A customer supplied one the other day, complete with a special junction box which had terminals screws that just went round and round.

Needless to say I didn't have a weatherproof junction box...

You would get a more waterproof joint using one of these.

Not sure it will be "*more* water-proof" ... a correctly made off joint in a galv BESA box with gasket won't give problems. Pack it out with compound to be sure and it'll still be fine in 30 years time when the plastic one has gone brittle and splits if you so much look at it funny!

The OP should remember to earth the galv box if he does this though
