Hi, Just need to vent off..... we have been let down again by another tradesman. What has happened to the good guys? Those who not only don't ask for your money up front, but turn up, do a good days graft, don't take the Pi55, don't treat you like you know nothing because you are an 'older' person (whereas in my case I know more than they do half the time). We are sick to death of talking about (and looking at) our gutted bathroom which needs re-vamping throughout.
The trouble today is that there is a lot of work about and they are being picky. They come round, give you a quote, secure the job but when the time comes they see what else is on offer and go on to another job (something easier , that they can probably earn more out of). I have decided that when I die I shall be reincarnated - as a man! I have all the knowledge at 64 years of age, moved 11 times and was married to a Builder and an excellent DIY -er, been up to my neck in projects for many years - but what I lack are the Physical abilities required to do some jobs. I am in despair of finding a good workman, and please do not tell me to use those wretched rated people sites - any of them !!!

It can be tough to find good tradesmen. I've had a bit of luck using those "wretched rated people sites", but also have asked for recommendations from people in my area on https://www.streetlife.com

Keep going local - word of mouth and small "one man" bands. If you find someone who suits then stick with them. Rated sites are simply rips run by sales people with no knowledge of anything but lying and scamming.

Its just as bad for small employers: guys start with you and, at first, seem OK then bump - they dont show, they show up half drunk or something after disappearing at break, they insult customers, argue with their fellow workers or even fight them. The good guys make up for the deadbeats but it can be heavy, expensive work hiring and firing.

What you have to ask yourself, is do you actually want these who don't do what they say in the first place, actually doing the work.
Can't be of any real help, but decent tradesmen do exist, and if you persevere with asking around locally you will find one.

Maybe the OP was accepting the lowest quote every time.

Maybe she was being "helpful" with instructions on how best to complete the work............................

It might help if you don't tell them you know more than they do....that's what us men do , no need to die first to start reaping the benefits
