If it was mine I would rewire with three core flex and use a bulb holder with an earth connection. Although you can extend the cable there is a problem if that cable is damaged as the lamp is metal so likely it would return through your body before it blows a fuse.

Yes, i would agree with ericmark. Rewire with 3core and a switched brass lampholder with earth terminal and check the base is earthed. And fit a 3amp fuse in the plug, does that plug have a neon lindicator ?

DS

Yes but the indicator bulb has not been working for some years ...

If I use a switched lampholder I would need a switch somewhere along the cable then ? The lampholder is enclosed by glass.

The most important thing to do is replace that cable with a sheathed variety, and earth your light fitting. As it stands, it's really unsafe.

Hi HawkEye,

I agree with the general consensus of previous posts, to fit Metal fittings, as opposed to Plastic; but in my view of flex colours, either 'Gold' or 'Black' sheath, to keep in fitting with the luminaire!

Here is a good site for an idea on what to get, in terms of Lampholder/Accessories/Cable components! : http://www.spares2you.co.uk/

Hope this helps,

Kind Regards,

Andrew :)

Will a three core flex fit through the narrow openings in the copper ?

It might not fit through the narrow opening in the lamp. In the meantime it will be safer to chop off the old mains lead to this item, to prevent a child plugging it in and killing himself.
Keep it as a decorative non-operating item, if it cannot be safely rewired.

You could make the holes bigger with a step drill, as it's copper it will drill easily.

I can't work this light out though, the cable enters through the base, and then re-enters the top? Is that right? Where is the cable routed to get to the top?

The tubular frame? Just make the hole bigger and fit little rubber/pvc grommets in the holes. 0.5mm² 3core flex is fairly small. I don't think 0.25mm² 3 core flex is meant to be used any more.
