just ordered a 13 amp hottub and deciding where to put it in the garden. I will require an outdoor socket putting in. Near to house would be easier but we both would prefer it at the bottom of the garden. If this is the case may be able to bring a socket from the garage which is nearer. Would this just require the electrician to come of an existing socket in the garage with swa to the hot tub position or from the small consumer unit in the garage which is already fed via a swa from the house? Any advice welcome thanks

Best advice is to ask your electrician who will be able to see exactly what you have in terms of cable sizes, RCDs, installation type etc.

Depends on quite a lot of things- cable size and length to garage and length of run to hot tub are the main ones.

If/when you do get it set up it may take a while to get to temperature....

Why would it take a while to heat up? It's a brand new hot tub designed to use just a 13amp socket supply?

It’s a bit like using a kettle to heat bath water.

It would take a similar time. Considering you don’t want it as hot as a kettle! But the hot tub would have more water

An immersion heater takes about a minute to heat a litre of water and costs around 45p an hour.

Let's suppose your hot tub only needs to be half as hot.

500 litres would take about four hours and cost around £2 in electricity.

Double that for a thousand litres.

I suppose it's well-insulated?

I thought u were implying the heat depends on how you connect it but yeah I see what you mean but these things are sold as being able to plug into any socket so I'll see how it goes

This is the CU in the garage fed via swa 20m from house. There is a spare b16 rcd, do u think this would be suitable for a sparky to connect an outdoor socket to? Thanks again

That is NOT an a spare RCD. It is a spare MCB.

As I said in post 2 an electrician is the best person to ask as he can see exactly what you have in terms of cable sizes etc.

Funky - re the electrician, I'm sure he'll be happy for you to do the manual labouring to dig the trench for the cable and to possibly excavate the hot-tub area for an earth mat.

maybe I'm being unfair on the heat up time.

I guess you are only looking for a 15°C rise in temperate
