Think i'm addicted to this forum!!
Truth is that I've found it very helpful in conjunction with my current studies.

I have a few rented properties, all in need of modernisation! One of them consists of this fuseboard, I considered it wise to open up the panel today to have a look to see what lies beneath! And wey hey, cob web heaven!!
I think a new CU is called for, wouldn't you?

Which CU would be adequate and what rating would it have to be??
The existing fuse unit has 2 x 30A fuses for the downstairs and upstairs sockets, and 1 X 5A for the entire lighting. The 5A on the left is spare and is unfused. The house has no immersion heaters or power showers etc etc, its a simple 3 bedroom property with nothing fancy attached. There is a combined heavy load on the downstairs 30A fuse I know, all appliances (washing machine, dishwasher etc) seem to be attached to it.

I was thinking of something like this, as BnQ are selling it along with 10 socket outlets for £70, plus I have it in my house and it seems adequate for the job as I live in a 3 storey house!!

What do the professionals say?

The bord you linked to is waaaay overkill to replace a 3 way wylex

IMO you would be better getting a six (usable) way CU, with 2 RCBOs for the sockets, and an MCB for the lights.

This will leave a bit of capacity for a shower / cooker / extra lighting cct etc...

I is getting your drift...

Which would you rather prefer, MK or Wylex? Out of curiosity?

whats the cable for on the right hand side with the terminal block

it runs across the skirting into a twin socket and terminates there, that socket feeds an electric fireplace. it hasn't been wired properly im sure of that. I need to get someone in to take a closer look.

I can't speak for RF but for me it's because MK are better quality and I find them nicer to work on.
cheers dave, info like that helps with the studies :)

I would like to hope my apprentice has been better trained than the fellar in the video, should that situation ever really happen to me.

I know immediatly what to do, as I was taught at college. Do you?

don't touch the dude getting zapped
switch off the source of electricity, if not permissable, move it away by using a non conductive object
check dudes vital signs, if pulse is zero, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation
check the dudes signs for shock, if in shock, have him lie down with his head slightly lower than the trunk of his body, and with his legs raised
oh and dial 999!!!!
