given all the extra taxes applied to London residents, I can imagine a queue of others wanting out.

A lot of the country is supported by taxes from London.So they can go somewhere starved of public expenditure and investment
A lot of the banks are based there, who extract vast amounts of money from the rest of the UK. Often from very poor people.
London doesn't actually produce much, it just fleeces the rest of the country.
To a far lesser extent than London itself benefits.
So, pay tax and then go somewhere neglected.
