I have been using Crown non-drip satinwood paint for the woodwork in the house, but have noticed that it is not resilient to being wiped too many times - mainly on the sharp edges of the architrave and skirtings. This paint is water based as the wife gets a headache with the oil based paint and it doesn't yellow so quickly.

I need to set about some decorating so would like to look at other makes / finishes. We like the satin finish but is there a recommendation for something harder wearing?

The Pros will be along to answer no doubt but I've been using Dulux Trade Satinwood no problems for years, seems pretty durable and goes on nicely.

I will have a look into the Dulux. I think I bought some years ago (not trade) and it wasn't up to much and went back to Crown.

If the tin doesn't say Dulux Trade, Crown Trade, etc, avoid it.

Rocktop? I haven't used it. I am an old skool decorator and try to push my customers towards oil based finishes. @Wayners has far more experience of waterbased finishes on timber so I will defer to him. I would however add that you have to ensure that the finish is absolutely clean- any clothing fibres or pet hairs will be visible in the new coating.

@opps Thanks for the opinion. Very useful. The Dulux water based paint I tried was more like water than paint and did not cover well. I have used the DIY Crown and it goes on fine but just wears off in parts. Admittedly, some parts have not been painted in a while so that could be part of the issue.
