    12v dimmable transformer query

See attached pics, it's the usual type of transformer I'm used to seeing with light TBH...? Now you mention the dimmer 'switch' load, I wanted to actually have the lights working off of an existing dimmer switch which has a ceiling pendant (breakfast bar light with 5x 40w G9's – the star lights...

    12v dimmable transformer query

Hi, I bought a set of x10 10W halogen low voltage starlights (probably about 12 years ago now but didn't have a use for them until now!) Bit confused though as the transformer says dimmable (made buy 'Ring' Model DET-105) but the instructions say 'WARNING' Not advisable to use with a dimmer...

GU10 lamp – higher watts with LED lamp?

If my ceiling lamp has a max 35w, can I use an LED bulb which is say 7w (equivalent to 60w) or do I need to stick to 3w (equal to 35w)?

Building a decking rail with balustrades

Hi Could anyone tell me how these balustrades are fixed in place. I know spacers are set in between them but are any actually screwed in or do they rely on being packed tight within the underside of the rail and bottom rail track? Thanks

Size of joists for a floating decking area on a flat roof

I'm building a 10.3x3.3m decking area on my flat garage roof. I can't fix into the roof as it's obviously rubber/sealed so was thinking of laying 50x40mm timber down as the joists to fix the boards in to. Will these be adequate - they only need to serve as a purpose for securing the boards...

Best drill bits for drilling into steel beams

Hi I fit plantation shutters and the amount of hours I've lost through getting dead arms and breaking drill bits drilling upwards is just not funny anymore. I've tried the usual brands like Bosch, even hi-speed bits and they seem to only last for 2 or 3 holes or so. Is this usual? If so, I'll...

LED 8 programs mini control box - where to buy?

Hi, anyone know where I can buy one of these? It's for a 500 led icicle xmas light set - didn't get chance to make it waterproof before the rain came and it's kaput! :( Bound to be a couple of pound somewhere??

Cat 5 cable - finding the correct end!

Hi, no there's a plug on the internet end and I've connected what I think is that other end to the socket but no luck. I've checked and triple checked the order of cores and connections. So apart from connecting each end at the various sockets I don't know which is the correct one.

Cat 5 cable - finding the correct end!

That's the answer i was looking for - knew there was something like that, thanks. So basically connect any 2 cores at the router end and how do I 'buzz' out the other end? What setting do I need the DVM on? The plug's on the router end, does that mean I have to cut it off? :/

Cat 5 cable - finding the correct end!

Hi Is there a way of testing with a meter to find the corresponding end of a Cat 5 cable? I thought I had it right, and have connected it up right to the socket but have no connection. Seem to think there's a way of joining 2 wires then measuring resistance? Thanks

Why do weatherboards on a door go vertical?

OK thanks, I thought weather boards were t&g? Either way, so if using t&g for a shed door, they have to be horizontal to keep out water, yet they're all done vertically, as you suggest, look better. But surely they'd be leaking then?

Why do weatherboards on a door go vertical?

I'm building a shed under a staircase to a raised roof garden. Why do the weatherboards on a door go vertical when tongue and groove boards clearly prevent rain more if fitted horizontally?

    Decking stringer - throat query

Anyone know if a 70mm throat is too small for a stringer? I'm building a staircase to a raised flat roof. The stringer will be 5.3mm long (run = 4.25m, rise - 3.3m). That makes 17 steps of 260mm run with 200mm rise) but the largest my supplier does for a stringer (9x2") leaves only 70mm for the...

Treated or non treated timber for framework of a shed?

I'm building a staircase to a raised roof garden and utilising the space underneath as a shed for kids stuff and garden bits etc. So would one normally use treated timber for the frame the framework and cross members of the shed or is non treated OK. Obviously the T&G outside timber will be...

Water based eggshell over oil based eggshell

Hi I'm a bit concerned that I recently painted a dark coloured water based eggshell paint (it's the new range Valspar, at B&Q) directly over the existing brilliant white Dulux oil based paint I originally painted, but didn't key the surface. I've done a couple of coats and it scuffs/scratches...

Outside cable junction/joint – any idea what this is called?

Just removed all the wet sealant (think it's either slightly off so not setting or too cold) and it doesn't rip, so the sealant's definitely acting as a wet jacket around the live area. I'll try the resin, no harm done, if no luck I'll replace it.

Outside cable junction/joint – any idea what this is called?

So not even filling with more resin would remedy it? (assuming it was dry to start with)

Outside cable junction/joint – any idea what this is called?

I was done properly initially, I think when the glass cover came off the weather got to the resin and that's causing the power to leak out (?). I actually tried soaking it with water yesterday (just to make the board trip to make sure it was the cause of the board keep tripping). It didn't...

Outside cable junction/joint – any idea what this is called?

I literally just found it before you posted that! Thanks a mill anyway. Could I ask, is there any reason they guy who fitted the gate (who installed this joint) used this one with the resin rather than a standard outdoor junction box which is far cheaper?
