    Quick wood cutting question

Hi I need a piece of treated timber cut lengthways so that it is 1cm thick on one side and 3cm thick on the other (looking at 1.8m long - it's for a fence run where there is an angle change). Would a timber yard (Huws Gray for example) be able to do this? I basically want a custom made...

    Gate post to fence angle

Hi I'm going to install a new 0.9 x 1.8m wooden gate on the side of the house with a fence running from this to the fence along the boundary of the property. The only thing is I plan to use 75mm fence posts for the gate (the hinges will be on the one connected to the wall) - the fence will...

    Banging in pipes

Hi I've got an annoying problem with banging coming from water pipes. It only ever does it when we're not using the water, using a tap etc and the washing machine & boiler are off. It seems to be coming from one or more of the three pipes that run along the wall behind the washing machine and up...

    Baumatic F60.2SS cooker hood

Hi thanks for the reply. I'm not particularly mechanically minded but having read the 31 reviews of this part a lot of people seemed to have the same problem and once replaced it seemed a lot quieter. I may give it a go anyway given the relatively cheap price and awful din when cooking!

    Reflector foil behind radiators

Hi we put some homebase radiator foil behind our radiators a few months back to try and save some money. On the instructions it said to use extra strong wallpaper adhesive which is what we did. However they keep peeling off the wall and the one in the hall which is against the gable wall has...

    Baumatic F60.2SS cooker hood

Hi I've got a Baumatic F60.2SS cooker hood which has been making a horrible vibrating/rattling sound since we moved in almost a year ago. It still works as I can feel the air coming out of the vent on the outside of the house it just makes a racket you can hardly talk over. I've heard of this...

    Extractor fan wiring

Going to replace extractor fan that's stopped working with a new one. They are both overrun fans and the old one currently has a 3 pole isolator switch outside the bathroom with L1, L2 and N connections all used. Looking at this fan on the fantronix website (Classic White 100mm 4" dia) but in...

    Draught under uPVC front door

Hi I've got a slight draught coming under the bottom of a uPVC front door. I've adjusted the hinges and it's not as bad now but I'm wondering if there is a product suitable for fitting in the recess in the bottom of the door frame which is about 1cm wide - has anyone tried a brush seal in this...

Smoke alarm going off when connected to the mains

The battery is working as if I test it now it works fine. I didn't see any dust when I opened it up but I'll give it a vacuum tomorrow to check if that makes any difference. It's only 6 months old!

Smoke alarm going off when connected to the mains

Hi we have a smoke alarm on the landing ceiling that is mains powered with a battery backup. When I went into the loft to the other day and sat on the floorboard above the smoke alarm it started going off until I moved away. Then today we replaced the existing floorboards with new ones and...

Cavity wall insulation gaps in loft wall

Hi I'm having cavity wall insulation installed on Wednesday. Our house is an end of terrace. In the loft the gable wall has a breeze block inner leaf but in some parts of this the mortar is either not enough or missing. APS who are doing the work told me over the phone that usually a plastic bag...

3 pole isolator switch for extractor fan

Thanks - the earths have PVC sleeving and are joined via a connector and the isolator switch is much smarter and better looking than the switch it replaced! Now just to replace the extractor fan...!

3 pole isolator switch for extractor fan

Hi I've just got a 3 pole isolator switch with three terminals (L1, L2 and N) on each side for a new extractor fan for the bathroom which has a built-in pullcord (and no timer). I'm replacing a broken extractor fan and my question is about the switch on the wall outside the bathroom. The old...

    Hedera helix ivy requirements

Hi I'm planning to grow some ivy up the wall of our house. It's almost always in the shade and could benefit from a bit of greenery (yes i've weighed up the pros and cons!) - the question is, what soil requirements does it have? At the moment a path runs along the bottom of the wall with...
