Run a waste pipe above a CU?

I have to run a waste pipe from washing machine. It needs to run horizontally along the same wall as the consumer unit is on and needs to run approx 15cm above it. Is this okay or is there an "exclusion zone" around the CU for anything to do with water?

Adding new rad to existing pipework

Cool, thanks. I will have to lift the floorboards to find that out though :( So, if I find the flow and return nearby I might as well cut into those whilst I am down there! Come to think of it the existing rad is the only rad in a previous extension, so chances are it is on its own loop.

Adding new rad to existing pipework

I need to add an additional rad in a new downstairs extension we have had built. The existing pipework runs (15mm) under the floorboards. I know that I need to cut into the flow and return pipes (presumably 22mm?) but it would be much easier if I could cut into the pipes for an existing...

Control on boiler to reduce output?

    Excellent, thanks.

Control on boiler to reduce output?

Thanks, I know that, which is what puzzles me by the WB advice that essentially says if you add more radiators you need to turn the water temperature up! This struck me as complete cr#p! My question is: do modern condensing boilers have an output setting that is set according to the size of the...

Control on boiler to reduce output?

So the advice from WB was b#llocks? The temperature control knob is not what sets output?

Control on boiler to reduce output?

I am looking at adding some radiators so calculated that my existing rads come to 15.4Kw and my boiler (WB Greenstar 24i)has a 24Kw output. So far so good, but I have read that boiler output is limited on installation to match the needed output. How? I mailed Worcester Bosch who replied that...

    Wet insulation in cavity

Thanks for the replies. I'll let you know what happens on Monday when I tell them to replace the soaked insulation!! Joking, but I will have a word with their guvnor as it seems pretty shoddy.

    Wet insulation in cavity

I am having an extension built and yesterday the brickie laid a few metres of cavity wall approx 1500mm high and filled it with rockwool insulation (I call it rockwool - wool/fibre stuff). They finished for the day and it has been torrentially raining ever since so the insulation is now soaked...

    Workshop planning and introduction

Midlife crisis + garage = workbenchs, tool storage, finally getting all those screws, bolts etc sorted into containers. But most importantly: an xbox, old arcade video games, and.... a drum kit! Buy an electronic kit and learn to play whilst also keeping yourself fit!

    Open fire doesn't heat room?

I have a "straight-up" chimney and it doesn't throw out as much heat as the "proper" fireplace I had in the last (Edwardian) house. Yes, as has been mentioned you are going to lose a lot of heat up any chimney, open fires are inefficient. But the one I have certainly heats the room nicely (big...

    Heat resistant wall plugs?

Thanks guys, well, you live and learn; I didn't know there was such a thing as concrete screws! I wonder if they would expand with the heat and crack the bricks? You are right SFK, I am making an assumption that the plugs might melt, maybe I am overthinking this.

    Heat resistant wall plugs?

I need to fix a steel smoke hood to my brick fireplace. It has holes to screw into the inside top of the fireplace opening. Occurs to me that as it gets very hot then plastic rawlplugs are going to melt! Any ideas - I can't find fireproof plugs as something that exists!

    advice on waste water pumps

The only way of doing that is to lift the floorboards, in several rooms. It's not even feasible to run along the walls as there would be several doorways to cross. (The utility room - currently a cupboard) is some distance from the kitchen/bathroom where I could cut into the cold supply).

    advice on waste water pumps

I've thought about it but it would involve digging up a concrete hardstanding for approx 10 metres to reach where the sewer pipework probably is.

    advice on waste water pumps

Thanks both, I will check out the Grundfoss. I hadn't thought about the waste pipe freezing but obviously the water supply pipe is a problem. My thought is to lag the cold pipe and run them both in large electrical trunking (say, 75mmx75mm) and fill that with rockwool type loft insulation). If...

    advice on waste water pumps

I have to plumb a washing machine into a utlity room that has no easy access to the waste water drain. So, I have to run a waste pipe along the outside of the house for approximately 20 metres to get to the gulley. (I have to run the water supply like this as well so will put both in some sort...

Knocking hole in wall for big extract fan - need a lintel?

Small (2mx2m) utility room with flat roof. Cavity wall (block inside, brick out). I need to install a large (250mm diameter) extractor fan in one of the external walls. It will be quite high up, so in terms of the load from above the hole it will be approx 5 coarses of brick, and maybe a...

Replace wood burner with open fire

So is my assumption correct that "this kind of chimney" is not suitable for an open fire? I had one once, you could only feel a warm from it with the door to it open, all of the heat seemed to go up the chimney, and your back was freezing! I like a fire that you have to move your chair back...
