    moving switch in stud wall

Older house and all the light switches are at 1300mm off the floor. I put some new ones in a stud work partition at 1200mm by mistake. Plasterers been and gone, now I see my mistake!! Is it going to make a right mess if I move them up to 1300mm?

    Mathematical genius required

From my school years learning about umbra and penumbra, we interpreted light from our sun (or a near star) as a reduction to individual photons setting off from the edges in exactly our direction. Obviously, a bucket load of photons coming from everywhere else on the surface in our direction...

I guess to have the fan running without human intervention, people can be forgetful...especially kids!

    wiring in a bathroom extractor

What I'd like to do, but don't know if possible, is have the fan and lights on one switch but have the fan only come on when the humidity goes above the threshold. I know a lot of bathrooms have it so the fan comes on irrespective. But we do have an opening window light in the room. My builder...

    uncovered old parquet 'damp'

I agree dpm’s were not regs until the 70’s, but that’s not to say they weren’t used before then. The house is 1964, no way to really find out or if one knocks off plaster at floor level should the membrane be visible coming up from the slab? Thinking I will bite the bullet and go DPM plus...

    uncovered old parquet 'damp'

I've got the dehumidifier running because the builders were mixing muck and the doors have been open to the sea breeze all day. Then I will see...

    uncovered old parquet 'damp'

It is one of those dual pin affairs that has a "wood or brick" setting. I know, pretty useless. I had it to test firewood. I will gaffer down a few squares of plastic and see if condensation forms over the weekend. I think that has to be the simplest way to see if the floor has a damp issue. If...

    uncovered old parquet 'damp'

The weird thing is this, part of the floor was laminate with a fibre underlay...bone dry, and no signs of condensation on the back of the laminate.

    uncovered old parquet 'damp'

We recently took up all the carpets and laminate flooring in your house. Underneath was original finger parquet flooring. We didn't see any signs of moisture, but when testing the parquet with a moisture meter, the hardwood strips are 14-15%. However, the underlying concrete slab is 5-8%. I...

    Sanding finger parquet

We have a ground floor all covered in hardwood finger parquet, laid on screed. It’s pretty ugly stuff and it’s not that evenly laid. We want to overlay with Quickstep Livyn. We were thinking that to get the floor nice and level, to give it a sanding. Is it fairly easy to get the floor level and...

    floor tiling round WC

What about sitting it on 12mm ply or something like that, then tiles cut to fit. I forgot to mention, soil is being renewed as well as pan.

    floor tiling round WC

I want to tile our bathroom floor with porcelain tiles that are about 10mm thick. I am also going to replace WC pan. At the moment the pan is set into the flooring, I guess previous owner put down new flooring and just trimmed around the pan base. It looks sort of messy. Is the standard practice...

    Vertical Radiators

~what's your installers idea on them :?:~ he just thinks they're expensive! The way the room is designed makes horizontal radiators a PIA. Basically, it's a dining area with only one suitable wall for horizontals, that is just where the dining chairs go, but two 'dead' areas that would take a...

    Vertical Radiators

Couple of questions.... Flat vs tube? Tube variety seem to have higher output for similar height x width, is there a reason for this? Is there a reliability issue between the more expensive makes, like Reina, and the lesser know makes from B&Q etc?
