Portable battery packs, are they worth having, and how to use?

I have had one for years, but the 300 watt inverter built in, is very different to the modern units. At £400 not cheap but it will power a lot more, it would, I think power a kettle as shown (750 watts) however, it may also have some uses at home as well, like transferring off-peak to peak...

For a change, good news, price of electric being reduced.

After seeing the payment for export dropping, from 15p to 12p per kWh now it seems import also reducing. That 2p drop is really going to drop my bill, as largest load is overnight.

Lost PC, what was on the hard drive?

Took in a PC for repair, it seems it may have been disposed of, I am sure I backed up all, but it may have had documents saying what people owes me, and other items, which I regard as sensitive, possibly passwords etc. The list of passwords together with my address etc, is not something I want...

Whole house heating, or room by room?

I was watching YouTube, and it auto moved to next video, and some guy was saying how we should heat the whole house, and heating room by room was a bad move, as heat moves room to room, I have seen the chimney effect on the stairs with some houses, so I suppose he does have a point. I suspect...

Secret nuclear bunker, how the information is presented.

As a birthday treat, I was taken to a secret nuclear bunker, not very secret with all the signs, but what I saw was what I had seen with around 25% of the BT telephone exchanges I had worked on. And all in all, was a load of scare monandry, and had to be taken with a pinch of salt, since in...

Angle grinder speed. And wire brushes.

The discs advert says 10,000 RPM, but the disc says 4,500 RPM the max speed of grinder is 10,000 RPM, but it does have 6 speeds, but nothing in the paperwork says what speed it runs at when speed 1 is selected. So I am not sure about using the brushes, clearly using eye protection etc, but they...

Cost of running a washing machine?

'Taking a mid-range washing machine with a 1400W power draw, run for two hours per day (a typical washing cycle), would cost 69p per day or £252.13 for the year from April under the new price cap.' really? This comes from a report saying 'Currently, electricity costs an average of 27.69p per...

Plug in solar, what do you think?

There are a few things about the plug in solar, main point is it is not installed, it can be moved house to house, so no registering required, if it is allowed. But clearly those with solar already will be able to export excess power anyway. Once you have the MPAN number for export, hard to work...

Anyone measured how much gas or oil used to heat DHW with the central heating?

I can measure how much electric is used, built into the immersion heater controller, last two home, no option but use gas, one had a combi-boiler the other an independent boiler for DHW (Main 7) but I never took a note. In both cases the meter was not in an easy-to-read location. I note with...

    Blond moments, missing the simple.

Bread slicer would not work for my wife. Tried it in another socket, still did not work. So get my meters out. Socket loop impedance OK and shows 240 volts. Plug in slicer, with switch off test cable with NCV tester, switch on and jumps from 1 to 4 bars, so seems likely fuse OK. Press button on...

Bare wire heating system gives fast heat up time, really?

Was looking at a problem getting enough DHW to a sink, and it seems one of these has been fitted, I was looking at the picture to see where powered, as it seems a lot of work to bring in a 4.4 or 6 kW supply, but I am hoping the bare wire is not what I think it is? I would have expected to find...

Cost to re-heat coffee, to making a new cup, efficiency of a microwave cooker?

I will drink coffee cold, cold coffee in the restaurant in Hong Kong cost more than hot coffee. But wife wants it hot, and will not drink cold coffee. So when she has nodded off and wakes up to a cold cup, I am often charged with rewarming in the microwave. Now it is not rewarmed to boiling...

Mark/Space control with central heating thermostats?

I know pre-modulating boilers better quality thermostats used mark/space ratios to stop it over shooting, The instructions for the thermostat shown, said how it would start switching off and on before the set point slowly decreasing the on time reducing the hysteresis. This messed up a...

Is it worth altering the water temperature dial spring/autumn to winter?

I have read about weather compensation, and it seems it alters the circulating water temperature, which I can see helps with a modern boiler. But what about with a non condensing, non modulating boiler? There is a large dial on the front to adjust the circulating water temperature, why? I see...

Export rate being reduced, will we need to change tariffs?

12p is still more than the 8.5p I pay for off-peak import, so will not change the fact that allowing the battery to fully recharge with off-peak tariff, does not matter, as will be getting more export once the sun comes out. But this may tip the balance for some tariffs. My inverter, as far as...

Home and Away, what is going on?

My Nest thermostat is only there to do DHW and CH only if we have lit a fire in the living room, in the main the Wiser thermostat controls the boiler, so not really worried any more what Nest does, however today heard the heating running, but living room warm from sun through windows, so looked...

Out of interest, what is a one pipe system?

I note at work we do have a one pipe system, steam goes in one end, and water dribbles out the other end, there is no return, but somehow I can't see that is what people call a one pipe system, does not matter if in series or parallel you need two pipes to every radiator, but I notice some...

News "costly mistake" by prioritising high-tech heat pumps over basic insulation. Really?

Yes, OK, stop losses first, or at the same time, but if the heat pump does not work with poorly insulated homes, neither will it work with well insulated homes. Yes, I see we have a 60 amp fuse in the supply to many homes, so 40 amps for the house we have 20 amps for the heat pump, so 4.6 kW...

The cat flap, and chip entry.

She wants to come in, we have a cat flap, and she uses it to go out, there is a delay coming in, as it has to detect her chip, there is a Ferrol cat we feel sorry for, so at moment sellotape over the catch so free for all, has been like that since first snow, but not only does she want letting...
