    Window won't open

Finally opened it. Made a “tool” – a bent flathead 3” nail, then I filed the flat head bit off (probably didn’t need to as I had removed the glass). I bent it in the wrong place so hacksawed the end off. Took the glass out again (need to perfect a method of taking the mitred infill strips...

    Window won't open

I just saw this on another thread where they hit it hard and it unlocked - mine is vertically hinged and it is the bottom mech not moving so I have it tougher I think... "I had a bottom opening window which would not open due to broken opening mechanism one side was free, the other side stuck...

    Window won't open

I have a number of double glazed window that do not open. I have had this before and a builder friend managed to fix it. I am not sure how he did fix it but he basically took the glass out and somehow got to the mechanism. Sadly I didn’t watch the rest. A metal part had snapped so it was only...

Sticky Oily Goo Leaking From Windows

All my double glazed windows have an oily slime seeping out at the bottom. I have wondered why since buying the house in 2013. Today I was removing a glazing panel to sort a jammed window (another posting to come!) and think I know the problem. The black glazing tape around the glass appears...

Trevi thermostatic shower valve - no hot water any more

I do think plumbing can be a bit of a dark art going by the zero number of responses/suggestions. As an engineer I can understand that fitting a complete system is technically ideal but fixing something that someone else installed can be problematic. For anyone that follows this thread I bought...

Trevi thermostatic shower valve - no hot water any more

This thermostatic shower valve (Trevi CTV Built-in A3102AA) has gradually got worse since I moved into the house 3 years ago. It used to work most of the time eventually kicking out hot water but gradually got worse. It would probably have been professionally fitted as the rest of the house...

    Sealing Bay Window Surround

I have posted before about my whistling windows and fixed a few through removal and binning the plastic trim, filling, caulking and painting. Looks good and no whistling. Now I have started on the lounge bay window but the gap is rather huge. I have removed a piece of trim from the front...

UPVC window internal gaps – too big for Caulk?

Got a rather large gap around the bedroom window. 10mm wide by 25mm deep. Considered pumping decorators caulk in as it is dead cheap and I have the plastic cover strips (40mm? wide) that go round the window hiding any dodgy sealant. What about stuffing it with paper and then caulking it...

Wall sockets out but no MCB trippped

I patiently waited for an electrician and tonight he popped round. He tested the MCB - nothing. Had one in the van, changed it and all working again. Phew Tenner but gave him £20 Happy days for everyone. So... MCBs do fail! Cheers all macker

Wall sockets out but no MCB trippped

Cheers guys I think it best I switch my circuit 9 off for the night and get a sparky in. Might look at one or two more sockets for the obvious first though. The RCD works fine - I tested that a few times earlier. Cheers macker

Wall sockets out but no MCB trippped

This morning my toast popped up prematurely. It turned out that HALF MY WALL SOCKETS HAD CEASED TO FUNCTION but NO MCBS HAD TRIPPED. I spent all day working out what my consumer unit controlled circuit by circuit fannying about isolating and checking and all that. In summary I have 2...

Take a shower door off to fit a seal on the bottom

Just to close this one out sort of. I finally worked out how to slide the bottom seal I had bought onto the door without removing the door. I did try to remove the door but got absolutely nowhere with that plan. Silicon spray over the seal, bit of perseverance and sweat and lots more...

Sealing internal UPVC – some 5mm gaps

I have stripped the cracked and loose silicone from the bedroom window UPVC to wall and sill interface. There was also an inch wide flat strip of UPVC on the window sill which I have taken off. I was going to seal around the UPVC frame but wasn’t sure whether to make good some of the slightly...

Take a shower door off to fit a seal on the bottom

We have a wet room in our ensuite of our new house. The water does love to slide under the door and head off to the corner of the room by the loo as the floor (IMHO) hasn't got enough slope on it. That aside having recently regrouted the floor around the shower area (due to a leaking wet room...

No Fensa cert for new windows

When we had our windows fitted we didn't want the trickle vent in the lounge as they became so full of cobwebs and spiders they couldn't function. Our builder told us if needed in the future for sign off etc we could have them added on. Can't see how hard that is to do but never tried...

No Fensa cert for new windows

I know this is an old issue but thought I would share my experience. Bought a house earlier this year and moved in beginning of July 13. I had had all my double glazing windows installed by a builder friend (xFENSA) and a few wonderful doors. Basically any change to the air-tightness of...

Radiator tails - how do I stop them weeping!?

Oops - I missed that you had fixed it so well done on that. Still worth sharing that lots of PTFE can help at times. Macker6464

Radiator tails - how do I stop them weeping!?

I had a brand new towel rail and the tail joint was quite a loose fit. I tightened it many times with varying amounts of PTFE and boss white but each time I had leaks and weeps. It was doing my nut in and I probably over tightened the joint too - luckily I didn't damage it but must have come...

    Leaking Pop-up Basin Waste

My sink basin has been leaking from the underside seal for a while. I have added a few photos to explain this. I assume I have to: Remove the U assembly, Unattach the pop-up rod assembly and arm, Unscrew the whole waste assembly from below, Disassemble and clean any existing...

Whistling DG Windows – any idea on sealant type

I am hoping to say that one day too! Glad it got sorted. I still haven't sorted my whistles out but had more pressing matters like leaking dry room shower floor - all fixed now. A friend tried to diagnose the problem with my whistling windows this weekend and eventually concluded the same as...
