    Blame lies with the stair fitters. Did you agree to this? Why on earth did they just not roll back the carpet to fix the stairs, then refit it? There does not appear to have been any need to cut out a section of carpet other than laziness.

    I have just done mine and used about a 3" strip of the floor tile on the base of the wall as a skirting. I had seen it dome before and liked the look. It has the bonus of making the floor area seem bigger. Jay

    You certainly dont want water absorbant stone! You need the opposite, stone that will allow water to drain, not hold it against the wall! As said, your first pointbis to identify the dpc if there is one and work from there. Any paved surface should be 150mm below this. Jay
