    Cracked concrete lintel repair

We recently moved into an old Yorkshire stone terraced house. The window in the kitchen has been replaced with a wider one at some point over the last 30 years, with the opening widened and a concrete lintel installed. I recently noticed a vertical crack in the centre of the lintel, which seems...

    Fixing shower rail to ceiling

Thanks all for your responses. I've attached the noggins with multiple coach screws, so can't see any problems there. I've used these in the past and they are really good at driving without piloting first. My only concerns are that the screw head will be gold and the bracket is silver, and...

    Fixing shower rail to ceiling

I have an oval shower rail to attach to the ceiling and I'm not sure of the best fixing method. I've been up into the loft and added noggins where the brackets will go to ensure it's attached to something solid. The ceiling looks to have been boarded twice over the original lath and plaster, so...

Board over old backing plaster on wall

Hi, hope you're all keeping well. I'm in the process off ripping out the bathroom and replacing everything in our old terraced house. On the exterior wall, the old grey backing plaster came off with the tiles, so I've taken that wall back to brick and plan to board with cement tile backers...

Bathroom extractor fan off light fitting?

Thanks @terryplumb Is it possible to install one with a run-on timer directly from the light fitting, or will the light switch have to be involved in some way? Only reason we were thinking of getting one without a timer was to avoid making too much noise at night, as our bathroom backs on to...

Bathroom extractor fan off light fitting?

Hi, hope you're all keeping well. We're having the bathroom ceiling boarded and skimmed next week but want to get the wiring sorted for an extractor fan to be fitted. The light fitting is accessible from the loft, but the switch is under some boarding that's a bit of a pain to be lifted. Is...

Opening up supporting wall on upstairs landing

Hi, hope you're all keeping well. We're hoping to open up a wall on the upstairs landing of our house, which is a small 1985 terrace cottage. The supporting wall runs up the centre of the house, with the staircase running alongside it, which I think is quite typical of terraces from that era...

    Strange timber wall

Thanks Tony. The boarding actually seems to run all the way to the upstairs of the house, creating a partition for the box room at the top of the stairs. Has anyone ever known this type of wall to be structural? It'd be great to get rid of the whole thing and expose the staircase if possible.

This is similar to how it's laid out

    Strange timber wall

Hi, hope you're all keeping well. We're hoping to open up the under stairs pantry doorway in our 1895 terrace house to accommodate a fridge, but are unsure if the timber wall is load-bearing. We actually had it boarded and plastered when we moved in, so I can't upload a picture, but the...

    Downpipe to nowhere - soakaway?

I've not had chance to get a photo yet - will get one tonight if it's still light when I get home. As the pavement is about 1.5m away from the house, I guess I'd have to reroute it so it drains horizontally (on a slight downward slope) across the front yard and on to the pavement. Is that allowed?

    Downpipe to nowhere - soakaway?

We recently moved into an old terraced house (c. 1895) with a small front yard. We've just pruned back a large rosebush to find that the guttering downpipe has rusted away and separated from the section that goes underground. I had actually noticed a bit of rainwater getting in to the crawlspace...

    Compact circular saw?

Sorry for the lack of reply to this - not been online in a while. Ended up getting the Evolution r165ccsl - far from professional grade but it's been great so far. Built a fence with it this past weekend and it can cut through other materials too, which is likely to come in useful. It's actually...

Constant running water sound in pipes

Just thought I'd give an update on this, as you were all really helpful in finding the problem. Yorkshire Water sent their contractors out to have a look and weren't able to find the leak on the street or in our garden, despite digging quite a sizeable hole. This narrowed it down and confirmed...

    Compact circular saw?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent low-cost compact circular saw. It'll mainly be used for doing long straight cuts in wood - fencing, doors, shelving etc. - but needs to be compact enough to store in a cupboard. I've seen a few on Amazon with mixed reviews - anyone had...

    kitchen carcass ply

A friend just made his own kitchen from plywood - it's a large room and the materials came to around £500. Rather than trying to recreate the look of a standard fitted kitchen (shaker doors etc.), he just cut out small sections at the top of each door with a jigsaw for the handles before...

    Cladding over tiles = bodge?

Thanks @bobasd We basically need to replace everything apart from the toilet, which was replaced when we moved in (the old one was disgusting). Here's an example of the type of thing we were looking at: https://www.bathroommarquee.co.uk/product/carrara-white-marble-mosaic-bathroom-panels/...

    Cladding over tiles = bodge?

Hi, hope you're all good. We've recently moved into an old house with a terrible bathroom, which we're hoping to get sorted ASAP. The entire room is covered in horrendous blue and pink tiles, with a bizarre Greek bathing scene embossed on every other tile. I started hacking off a few tiles in...
