    Laying Patio

Hi, I wish to replace a block paving patio with larger paving slabs. The current sub-base of the blocks is sound, hardcore/concrete with a well compacted layer of sharp sand on top. Can I simply lift the block pavers and lay some cement on top of the sand to bed the slabs and maintain...

    painting on lining paper

If you take a little extra time when applying and use a 1400 grade paper (available at paint shops not the DIY stores) there should not be any joints visable after a coat or two of quality emulsion. For a professional finish (my Dad does it this way for a living) 'size' over the joints first...

    Garage Conversion

Just an update really as another 4 to 5 weeks have passed. Walls have been dry lined. I opted for the Dot 'n' Dab method, thanks Masona. My Dad came down last Bank Holiday and stayed over night, he dotted and I dabbed! I battened the ceiling earlier and we re-boarded it. All the...

    Lining walls

Most of my Dads decorating jobs these days involve replacing textured wallpaper with lining paper, people are defo going back to plain 'painted wall' effect including in my own house. He uses 1200 gauge paper (it's like cardboard!!!) bought from a proper decorators/paint shop (DIY stores are...

Wickes Fast Fix 15 Laminate Floor in Three Shades of Oak

I have changed the name, I thought it was "contract 15" but it is a current stock item at Wickes and they call it "Fast Fix 15". They also do it with a "10" and a "12" year guarantee for slightly cheaper! Would anyone recommend it. Ta.

    Garage Conversion

I haven't posted anything since January but as predicted, I have managed to move this along during the early part of April. Completed the floor, eventually settling for a coachbolted wall plate down both sides of the garage and speedy hanger joists across at 400mm centres. I found it easy...

A Technical Dot 'n' Dab Question

Hi Masona, This is for the inside of my garage conversion. It was building control that recommended upgrading the insulation. The walls are constructed of two brick leafs with a 2" (uninsulated) cavity. Cheers. Pal

A Technical Dot 'n' Dab Question

Can anyone advise how close to the wall you can knock back the board and have a good fixing i.e. what gap will there be behind. It has been recommended I use thermal boards to increase insulation but I am worried about the loss of "inches" in the room, I think the minimum board thickness is...

    New Shower Enclosure

When I tiled my shower last year I looked at some product in Homebase. I think it was called Aqua Panel and was from the USA. I think it had 10 year guarantee etc. It was a waterproof sheet that looked like tiles and was either square edge or bullnose, depending on whether you were tiling...
