    Restoring wooden block flooring

Wood block flooring used to be stuck down with a mixture of hot pitch (bitumen) and oil.The reason the flooring is loose, is because the oil has dried out leaving the pitch brittle. If there was any moisture it would have shown long before now.Wood block floors were never laid on floors without a...

    Restoring wooden block flooring

It's a guess, but I would say "pitch pine" though it could be Oregon pine (Douglas Fir) which is quite resinous ,and smells really sweet when sanding.I'm sure some people won't agree however. They both sand up lovely! P.S.If you do relay don't change the pattern, or you'll maybe find yourself...

    Restoring wooden block flooring

First off can I say your floor probably doesn't need levelled unless you've had recent work done on the subfloor. It looks as if the old 'bitumen & oil' adhesive has perished. So 'priming' the subfloor with some advice from F.Ball adhesives, might make screeding uneccessary. F.Ball also make a...

Floorboard repair and floor sanding/varnishng advice needed!

Try your nearest salvage/demolition yard to source the flooring. You should also try to get your hands on some 'broader' boards,of the same species, as these would be useful in filling the bigger gaps.Sawdust & resin would only be an option where there is a tongue, as WYL has suggested. If wider...

    OSMO WAX overlap staining?? Help

You can still finish it with the buffer you've got just try asking one or two floor sanding guys about the carborundum screen/disc.I know there's plenty do sanding, I've got family in ChCh.one's even in the flooring trade, though nothing to do with sanding. mack

    Floor sander abrasive paper... how?

The answer 'Tone' has given you is correct, it's like 'Hook'n'Loop' or 'Velcro' the principle's the same.Though, as he said you have to get it centred or it will go for a walk. The other alternative is a carborundum disc which attaches in the same way, these, like sandpaper may be had in various...

    Laminate on sloping floor

Many Victorian floorboards are 1 1/8" or 28mm so there should be enough "meat" on the boards to resand, but if not, you should at least have a "flat" surface to lay laminate. mack

    New Oak Floor

Without seeing the situation I can't recommend what type of fixing. You certainly wouldn't want to compromise the DPM.You say you have a joiner, what does he plan? mack

    Levelling a kitchen floor

    OSMO WAX overlap staining?? Help

If you think he can use a drum/belt sander you've not read his post mac391 Kevin was obviously not aware of the vagaries of either ,but he is aware enough to know, not to go that route AGAIN.As for water popping 'almost' everyone knows the purpose is, to open the grain and let the 'finish...

    OSMO WAX overlap staining?? Help

Sounds as if your 'hire' shop has let you down. You really need to get a finer paper on that buffer 150 grit maybe even 200. Forget the nonsense about using belt/drum sanders, you'll only make more marks. You must get every speck of grit vacuumed up before the final sanding,we use disposable...

    6mm ply over existing floorboards

Not if you've got an 'air' nailer :D Seriously, opinions differ on the merits of staples versus ring nails, have done for years. Most hard flooring guys I know prefer ring nails though.... mack

    New Oak Floor

A 38mm nail will penetrate through an 18mm floor to a depth of 15mm,so that should be OK.I'm at a loss as to why he needs to use glue though. If the flooring is nailed @ 300mm o/c there's no need to 'glue' as well. mack

    Levelling a kitchen floor

Best to do it in one operation, but if it's 'got' to be done in two,so be it.The Ball stopgap green should be OK with their sealer.I prefer Ardex myself, bit more expensive but I've found it easier to work with. This should've answered your Q too 'andeehunt'. Good luck. mack

    Levelling a kitchen floor

If the bitumen is 1" thick it will be asphalt, usually installed in wet/damp situations.Check the rest of the floor has a DPM. mack

    Levelling a kitchen floor

I think you should check if you have a DPM before doing anything. The presence of bitumen on top of flagstones sounds a bit suspicious. mack
