PWA and the 6m / 45 degree rule

Hi Folks, Making slow progress with my detached garage build, but I've got to the point of getting quotes for groundworks. I live on former sand dunes, so a special foundation was always going to be needed - raft or piles. My initial thoughts had been a raft foundation, as I am a touch over...

    Riveting?!

Hi Folks, Looking to replace a couple of reflectors on my trailer and they’ve all been riveted in. I’ve drilled a couple out (see picture) but can’t seem to find any equivalent rivets with a flange on both sides. Can someone point me in the right direction of where to buy these please? Also...

Site Plans for PP - All online plans are out of date

Hey guys, As some of you may know, we've built an extension on the side of our house over the past few years. I now want to put in PP for my detached garage, as I've definitely decided I want it <2m from the boundary (1.3m in fact) and it'll be 4m high, so PP it is! The problem I have is that...

    DIY Car Tyre Removal

Anyone know if this sort of tool is worth the money (£55) for removing car tyres? I have 9 tyres to do (2 sets and a spare) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204401267931?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=-gfqthrrqbo&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=lrAhcXmlTuO&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Any...

    Leaking stopcock with lead pipe

My mate’s new place, which is a fixer upper. Unfortunately the stopcock is leaking from the tap thread. Ideally you’d replace the whole pipe but he’s not got the money for that. I’ve done a bit of diy plumbing but never worked on lead before, so looking for some steer here before messing...

New MPDE water feed using insuduct - how to go through foundation that sticks out beyond wall?

Hey all, I want to run a water feed to my planned garage. I plan to t off from the pluming in the house and take the MDPE pipe out of the wall using a hockey stick pipe and insuduct. I thought that would work, but I’m being scuppered by the house foundations which extend out further than the...

    Terrible damp…

Hey guys, Looking at moving to our next project house and found one that’s a possibility, but it’s got a terrible damp problem. Not been inside the house yet, but here’s some photos from the estate agents. It’s a 1905 brick farmhouse, so I assume solid walls. The worst of the damp is around...

Best way of getting rid of tree stump (that’s out of the ground)?

Dug up this bad boy after a battle…but it’s too big & heavy to move without the digger and I need to get rid. I think all the dirt will blunt my little chainsaw. All I can think of is getting an axe and swinging way until it’s in more manageable pieces…so looking for other suggestions please!?

Soakaway 5m rule from buildings - would this include sheds?

Hi all, My new garage will need a soakaway. The only place that it could be sited to be 2.5m from all boundaries and 5m from the house and garage would mean its about 3m away from a wooden shed. NHBC seems to refer to soakaways being 5m away from the building foundations, which would make me...

Gas strut / piston for closing bottom hinged cupboard?

Hi folks, I've built a small kitchen unit to store our recycling bins. I've attached the hinges to the bottom of the unit as my plan is to open the door (a standard 600mm cabinet door) and inside the heavy weave bag will be hooked to the door so it opens wider at the same time to allow larger...

Can’t open UPVC hinge to adjust - any tips?

Sorry, I don’t know the name / brand of the hinge but I assume in addition to the hinge bolts on the left there will also be so internal bolts behind the main chrome plate to adjust the door. However, I can’t get any of the hinge covers off! I’ve tried a flat bladed screw driver to leaver it...

    Clever boy…

I’d bought some 3m copper pipe from Screwfix last night, and needed to secure it to my roof rack. All my ratchet straps and bungee cords are, of course, stored in one big tangled ball in the back of my truck. Old genius boy here starts pulling on a bungee cord that was sticking out of the rats...

Buying a mini-digger - DIY madness or good idea?

Every time I hire a mini digger for a weekend it ends up costing around £250 once the delivery, vat etc is added in. If I have one for the week it’s circa £550. This year I’ve got a number of projects planned which involve digging: - Remove 400mm soil for 6 x 4 m deck - Remove 300mm soil for...

Flat / Slimline 3 pin plugs?

Hey guys, I've got a plug socket behind a piece of (almost) immovable furniture, and I'd like to use plug but keep the furniture flush to the wall. I've found these Evoline plugs online, but it seems like they're only 2 pin Euro. Any ideas if there's a UK 3 pin equivalent? Thanks Andy

Any solar experts or folks that have solar installed on here?

My local council has arranged a tendering process for solar panels and batteries for interested folks with a view to getting some bulk buying discounts. I’m skeptical that such schemes actually save much, but I really don’t know. Here’s my quote, £7.2k for 12 panels installed, and a further...
