Turn off the power.
Remove the dimmer switch.
Position the wires so that they are not touching each other, or anything else (they're rigid, so should stay where you position them, but wrap the bare ends in insulation tape if you aren't sure).
Turn the power back on.
Q1: Does the light come on?
Turn the power off again, and join the wires with a piece of choc-block.
Turn the power back on.
Q2: Does the light come on?
Q3: Why are you replacing the old switch? Was it working OK?
