Hello.

I am trying to find a good reliable, cost effective way in setting up broadband at my flat. I am thinking of getting wifi infrared heaters and so need broadband BUT the trouble is finding a broadband supplier which is cost effective, reliable and ones in which I am not tied to a 12 or 24 month contract.

I believe the set up of phone SIM cards inserted in a wifi router are not available any more? I think that has been stopped or just open for mobiles?

The reason why I do not wish to be tied to a contract is because I need the flexibility as my mum does not keep well and so will be away for unknown periods of time.

The times I am available will be spent working from my flat on my laptop. BUT I am also thinking of getting wifi infrared heaters as they seem to be cost effective in comparison to my storage heaters; I have no gas in my area and it will allow me control the flat temperature during winter times thus keeping the pipes warm and avoiding any burst pipes. I know I could simply switch off the water and I have done that last year but I dont think it is a good idea in doing that again second year running.

I have done a little research and found some such as -
Rebel Fibre but they have a set up fee of £100.00
Freeloa but again set up fee £69.00
Wifi Hire UK 35 days £145.00
All in all from what I can find there are suppliers out there but I have to pay a set up fund.

If anyone has a good 1 month broadband supplier/method experience willing to share I am listening.
Thank you

Good luck with finding a Landline/Fibre BB supplier that does not require a minimum contract period. My excellent supplier is via a landline contract and costs me £33 monthly for unlimited fast downloads and 24/7 calls to UK landlines and mobiles. I need the inclusive call package for Mrs Scally who is often bedbound and the phone is her way of contacting our extensive family and her many friends.

Tell us whereabouts you are may help in providing advice. I am with Toob, they do a deal where you have a rolling 1 month contract at a slightly higher price. Mine is a contract 1GB upload and download for £29 per month I think the non contract is £33.

You mention the heaters but what else will you need the internet for? Streaming, downloading, gaming, social media or just general web browsing, emails etc..? There are certainly mobile broadband providers out there e.g. Smarty that give some reasonable speeds, bandwidth for the price but that will certainly depend on your 4g/5g availability etc..

wifi infrared heaters
.......
it will allow me control the flat temperature during winter times thus keeping the pipes warm and avoiding any burst pipes.
IR heaters do not work like that, and if you expect them to prevent burst pipes you will be disappointed.

IR heats objects and people directly in front of the heater. That is all.
They do not heat the air or the building as a whole, which is why they are typically used in large open warehouses, factories, smoking shelters outside and similar.

In any case, having wifi control of them is pointless.
No one needs to adjust the temperature of a building when they are not in it - the heating would of course be switched OFF in those circumstances and any frost prevention provided by a simple frost thermostat which is set once at installation.
When returning the heaters would need to be on - but as IR heaters provide heat instantly, turning them on before you get there is just a way of wasting electricity.

I am also thinking of getting wifi infrared heaters as they seem to be cost effective in comparison to my storage heaters;
They are only 'cost effective' because storage heaters will heat the building 24/7 by design but IR heaters can be switched on/off as required.
However any heater switched on/off as needed will be better than a storage heater pouring out heat 24 hours a day.

A plug in convector or oil heater would be a far better choice for frost prevention as they will heat the air in the building.
They all have thermostats, and even if the thermostat fitted to it doesn't go down low enough for frost prevention you can buy a plug in thermostat to use with any heater such as this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermostat-Temperature-Control-Greenhouse-Analogue/dp/B0BPJT8WQ3/?th=1
and if you won't like that plug in affair, hard wired equivalents to use with installed heating are available and have been for ever.

If you do not actually use the internet and want wifi access when at home then you don't need an ISP, setup a personal wifi service with a router as it will not need the internet connected to it to work.
