I was chatting to my mate Geordie Dave today, and he tells me that South Shields people used to be called "Sand-Dancers". Don't know what this means or if it is even still applicable? And even if it is, then no offence meant cause he is a Makem or a Takem Or a Monkey Hanger?
I am born and bred in Portsmouth, and the Southampton lot call us skates amongst other things. It is a Navy Thing apparently.
TS

Looked in my 2360 certificate and it is as you said, I can confirm as well that the 2381 in the latest 16th edition. I will not give the rest of the code on my certificate because you will realise that you were borne when i finished university....

Thermo, you are correct, it is better to be a skate than a scummer. You obviously have some knowledge of the South Coast rivalry. :)
Andrew, I had a chat with Geordie Dave and he don't know why South Shields people are Sand-Dancers. My guess is that it is a WWII thing. Something to do with the Wilson-Keppel-Betty "Sand-Dance" thing, but that is a long-shot. Much before your time and my time mate.
By the way Geordie Dave don't even know why Geordies are called Geordies. But lets not get into the Jacobite Rebellion business.
Look forward to being better informed on all these things,
TS.

So why are Hartlepool geezers called Monkey-Hangers. I believe it is a thing from the Napoleonic Era, when they tried to hang a monkey cause they thought it was a french spy. Is this right?
And where is Hartlepool, is that where Juliet Bravo was set?
