Hello

Can 240v 10a/13a cable be used to make car cigar lighter temp extension lead to power a electric tyre pump(5-10m length).

No values on pump except 12 v.

TIA

Except for flex cable does not have fixed amp rating. But in general most cars fuse the cig lighter to 16A so as far as over heating should be OK but on 12 volt the volt drop is really a problem so only way to find out is to try.

Yup.

The pump might not work very well though.

Well it won't be getting that much.

"10A/13A" cable means 1.0/1.25mm².

Volt drop for those sizes is 46/37 mV/A/m, so assuming the maximum load for those cables, i.e. a 120W/150W motor in the pump (which doesn't seem outlandish), you'll drop 4.6V/4.8V over 10m.

And you say "extension lead", so you've got the existing pump cable as well.

I can't see it being a success.

Looking at the stuff sold in car accessory shops, most accessory manufacturers seem to consider a bit of something like 1 mm 'figure of 8' speaker cable is good enough for the job.

Not much point in going for the 'high quality, low loss, oxygen free copper' stuff either.

They probably factor in the VD they know they'll get from their integral cord.

Add in another 5-10m and all bets are off.
