can someone please tell me if a 500Va dimmer switch will power 500w of lights, from my knowledge a 500Va switch would be more than sufficient as most lights run from a 5V circuit but just wanting to check, Cheers!

Haha, very amusing

A VA is the same as a watt. (volts x amps)

If the one you have got is intended for UK mains, it will be calculated as (about) 240volts x (about) 2 amps

If it was intended for 12volts it would be about 40amps

If you are using halogen lamps you need a dimmer rated at double the nominal power of the bulbs.

If you are using low voltage lamps and transformer(s) you will need compatible dimmer and transformer(s).

edited to correct my mental arithmetic

ahh thanks so its just like driving then when a 3 point turn is that same as a turn-in-the-road lol, the english language so easy to understand!

... Only at unity power factor :) (but as the question was a basic one on lamps, I'll let you off for that  )
