Does anyone know the actual derivation of this number? I assumed it was a British Standard, but I think it's BS 6004 which actually defines t&e cable. And BSI don't seem to acknowledge BS 6264 except as a spec for medical specimen jars.

6 is the voltage rating, 3 is a lower voltage rating for most flex
24 is flat cable bare earth, 94 for swa, 18 round flex
2 is the number of cores
Y is pvc insulation and sheath, X just pvc insulation

You don't have a link though, do you? I've spent some time searching but can't find anything yet.

The interesting thing is the large number of suppliers supplying BS6242Y cable.
 
No link sorry , it is true though.
The system is now being replaced by cenelec codes.
