Just received an unsolicited text from this claiming to be a "shelter" charity, which if I reply to it will mean some money will go towards homeless children. Hmm, scam or no scam?

The charity exists (a correct registered number was quoted), but not the correct SMS number was used. Have emailed the company to determine the situation - in the meantime if you get one, I'd advise ignoring it until confirmation comes.
