See i agreed with most of what you said but then the bodge statement comes out. You know nothing about me.....

you think that a socket should be allowed to be added in a kitchen without adding RCD protection, thats bodging. sure there may not be an RCD now but if new work isnt done to new standards things dont progress, we would still be plugging our irons into light sockets, and whilst you could argue some regs RCD's on general kitchen sockets is of sound logic.

Far from it. The reason that I and other regulars post here is to help the DIY'er who respects the current regulations and doesn't want to bodge.

Plenty qualified sparkies bodge.

But things are moving on and if enter into a contract with a registered sparks, if things go wrong you have more customer power now than ever before.

One thing for sure, i won't be paying anyone an extortionate amount to fit a socket in my house. Something i can't do yes but certainly not a light or socket.

But if you do want to install a light or a socket every regular poster here will do their best to help you - and the advise will be in accordance with current regulations.

Whether or not we agree with the regulations is neither here nor there. The fact of matter is they exist and until they are amended they have to be worked to.

I have to say, Pens, that I agree with you wholeheartedly here.

There are some regulations that I question, both regs that I think are too severe and 1 or 2 that I think are too lax (in this case I always insist on installing to a higher standard*), but like you say, we all have to adhere to them.

Customers often complain about the work I have to do as part of an installation job. I always tell them that I don't have any say in what goes into the regs themselves but that I am duty-bound to comply with them fully.

*One example was a customer who wanted a 1362 socket outlet in their bathroom. Although the installation would have easily complied with 7671:2008, I declined because they had young children who had an unhealthy interest in socket outlets. They used to pour drinks over them! So I insisted on masterseal or no installation. They wanted an ordinary socket outlet...
