We are proposing to replace existing kitchen lights (about 30 years old)with a halogen lighting fixture which has a metal covering and wiring connections in a terminal block with live neutral and earth connections.

Existing lights are operated by a double switch. One of the lighting ciruits (furtherest from the switch) is straight forward and can be connected to a single ceiling cable without any problem. The other has a variety of cable connections into the existing ceiling rose (see diagram - link attached below).

From the diagram, we are thinking of connecting the new light wiring to the main terminal block as follows:

- Brown to black wiring identified by blue tape (tests live)
- Blue to single Black terminal on right side of terminal bock
- Earth to Earth terminal

Thanks for any advice if this is the correct fitting.

other way round.(but that's just a guess with your unusual coloured tape markers)

that little bit of diagram at the top - whats that all about? with the reds and earths.

The diagram below would also work. What you must do is make sure the earth IS attached to earth. How you do this is up to you, but i strongly recommend you get your 30 year old wiring inspected at the earliest convenience.

As far as i can tell all your tape should be red - red means live.

Where you've written "tests live" how do you know this? what test equipment did you use? turn the switch off and test it again ;)

The overall diagram attempts to illustrate the various cabling within the ceiling rose. The bit at the top covers other cable terminals within the rose independent of the lower teminal block which provides connections to the existing light.

The "test" was done with a proprietary test probe with the power on - not sure if the switch was off. We are "off-site at the moment but will repeat the test with the switch off as you suggest.

Wire connections to the existing lights from bottom terminal block(identified white in diagram) do not appear to be linked to any live red wiring.

Hope this makes sense!
