Hi. this is my first post on DIYnot as i have recently bought my first house and need help.

i am wanting to change the cooker and single plug socket from white plastic to chrome. the only problem is, is that the white socket that is fitted at the moment is a vertical rectangle one and the only ones available now are rectangle horizontal ones.

why is this and can i get them anywhere? i would fit a horizontal one but it has been drilled into tiles and will be visable.

thank you so much for reading my first post and am happy to see your response.

cheers, ryan. :)

Any chance of a picture, the electricians on here like pictures.

Hello.

Does the cooker switch need to have the socket outlet ?
Yep, and a pic, so as we can tell you to 'earth' the new faceplate  etc, etc..

hi. thank you for taking time to look at my post. here is a photo of my current socket which i have and the one i want is the same but chrome. is this possible or can you suggest anything else which means i can keep the same shape face plate so drilling holes arn't visable? thank you

If you are not bothered about losing the socket then it's not too hard.

Something like this would do the job just fine

Other styles are available. That was just the first one I came to.

hi. that would be perfect but what would i do with the plug socket wires as they won't be used? thanks

There will just be cooker cables at the back of the plate you have at the moment.

The socket is just tapped off the cooker supply, but this is all done internally on the cooker controller plate. The socket is not wired to the normal socket circuit like the rest of your sockets will be.

oh ok, so do i need to disconnect them or just connect it up tothe cooker switch as normal? the cooker switch is always switched on and the plug socket is off. will this mean the plug sockets power from the old switch will be constantly on resulting in electricity waste?

Hello Ryantaylor.
As RF has said, the socket will hopefully not have it's own cabling etc, you will probably have two cables, an incoming feed to the switch, then a point of isolation (your new switch!) then the supply to your cooker outlet plate.

Out of interest:

Have you changed cooker ?

Have you changed the sockets/switches in this room too ?

Pics ?

Regards,
Ed

Yes, the electrons will be flying out of the end of the cable.

Just a word of advice. That cooker isolator is old. I'd get a PIR done if you've just moved in - you dont want to get the place up to scratch then find you need a rewire. I bet your lighting circuits dont have an earth - if this is the case, you must NOT fit metal switches or lights.
