My bathroom lights (Have 5 halogen downlighters) are not always working when i turn on the switch - and then sometimes they do! My logic is suggesting it has to be the switch (as when they do come on - they ALL come on). Its just a white plastic inexpensive light switch - is it likely to be this or is there something else i should consider?
Advice please. Is it the switch?

First place I'd look would be the switch, probably a loose connection. If not that, look for another common point of failure, such as a junction box (presumably there's an accessible loft above the bathroom?) where the wiring might be loose.

Thanks for that - will have a look at the switch and or replace it first - my DIY skills will run to that - and then seek out junction box in loft. Do you reckon a fault in the switch would be obvious or should i just replace that anyway?
If it's aloose connection in the switch it will be pretty obvious. Either it will come free as you lift the switch away from the wall/ceiling, or you'll be able to free it from its terminal without any effort. Remember to turn off the power first ...

Ok next question please! I have a downlighter - wired to a transformer - that comes on when I turn on the lights but after a few minutes goes off. Then may come on again....I initially thought the transformer may be too close to the bulb and overheating but have moved it further from bulb but problem persists...could the transformer itself be overheating and need replacing?

Check if the transformer feed one or a group of bulbs. Add up the value in watts of the bulb(s) and chose a transformer with wattage higher than the sum you add.

Cheers PJ and Chris. Shall have a look at it in the morning. I know each of the downlighters has its own transformer so I shall get one the same to replace. This is a marvellous forum!
