We have just moved into a house built using Laing Easiform or another similar construction technique (ex MOD married quarters). In every room throughout the house there are airbricks leading directly to the outside. These are about 9 by 6 inches with 1/4 inch slots. As you can imagine it can get a bit draughty and someone has half blocked one up with polyfiller in one of the bedrooms.

I can see why you'd need one in a room with a gas fire in or in the kitchen but is it necessary in every room? Would it be ok to cover them over in the bedrooms? I assume the bricks ventilate the cavity and as you can see the outside world through them they would ventilate even if the inside vent was blocked.

The vents are the equivalent of modern day trickle vents. You can block them up providing you have trickle vents on your windows. Otherwise you may suffer from condensation.

Except for vents in any room containing a gas appliance. As you say, these may be necessary for the safe working of the appliance and should not be blocked without checking with a gassafe engineer.
