I had carpet fitters in my house and they have cut through the alarm wires.
The outside sounder went off and would not stop. Eventually after 45 mins it stopped automatically. I figured out there was a short from another cut wire, connected it. Now the light of the tampe on the control panel is on flashing and would not stop. It also shows extra 2 zones which e don't have in the house. We only have devices 1 to 6. red lights are flashing on 7 and 8.
It is connected to mains, the lid is on.
I can't figure out how to close the circuit tamper.

I worry that the outside sounder might go off during the night and the neighbours would kill us this time, or the council.

Many thanks

As the carpet fitters obviously know that they caused the damage, get someone in and send them the bill.

Phone, email and send a letter to this effect ASAP, - and get it done professionally, then get the carpet fitters back to re-lay the carpet, at NO COST to yourself.

Nothing to argue about here, their Insurance Co will pay, I assume they had insurance?

If I was you I'd be telling the fitters there is a claim going in against them and get them to pay for it sorting properly.

The cable should be under the floorboards, not under the carpet.

Carpet fitters won't pay.

Carpet fitters won't pay.
But the firm who sold the carpet will, same difference.

Not as much of a problem as Joe paints, go for it.

Hi Stank,

Excellent advice in the above posts, it's their fault, there are thousands of alarms installed with cable running beside the carpet as well as under the floorboards so the guys are right. Go with them on the compensation issue.

You can do one of two things (after suing the fitters obviously):-

Either attempt a repair yourself or have someone in to fix it for you and let the carpet fitters foot the bill.

At the moment we don't know what control panel is in situ, or even if the system is under some form of maintenance contract, so we are a bit in the dark on that score. Basically, you need to re-join each wire colour for colour, but you can bet on it that a fuse has already blown, so you need to have the fuse replaced with a known good one of the same value. If the system was installed by one of the 'nationals' they may have programmed the panel so that any attempt to open it shall result in a permanent tamper fault which only they can fix because they have got the enginner code and not yourself. However, this is not always the case and you may be able to open the panel without this added problem. So, if you intend to try a repair you need to let the site know who installed the system and what is on the front of the panel. We can help you from there on in. Alternatively, you may be worrying about the external warning device activating again. This may not happen if the system is already silenced and you still have a fault condition showing.

If it's of any help, which I doubt, carpet fitters aren't the only ones who come along and mess up systems and claim it's your fault. I've known central heating guys and builders try the same dodge. Go ahead and follow the excellent advice you've already been given above.

Best Wishes.

They won't pay as the alarm is not installed properly.

Get the alarm installer to fix it free of charge - he created the problem.

Not quite with you on that one Joe, Are you saying they won't pay if Stank fixes it himself, if so, I reckon you are smack on correct. Well done.

Take Care

If he fitted it himself what's he bleating on about?

Not quite with you Joe, are you talking about the alarm system or the carpet. Can't see any mention of him fitting the carpet so it must be the alarm system you are referring to. If so, the "Sale and Supply of Goods and Services Act" will cover him.

Thankyou for your excellent input on this topic.

Are you on drugs? The cable shouldn't be under the carpet. You wouldn't put mains cable under the carpet. If you put cables under the carpet and they get damaged - it isn't the person that walked/cut/handstand on it - it's the idiot that put it there.

i know I should seek compensation. I just think its going to be more of a headache than it's worth it. I even paid their fitting fee, which was extremely stupid of me. I'd like to try and fix it myself, the engineer will charge £130.00 +VAT for a call out fee.
I'm sure I can fix it, unless the fault remains in the memory, which the only way to be fixed is the engineer specialist code.
I have reconnected all the cables colour to colour. The cables were on top of stairs, I then chiselled them into the stairs and covered with duct tape.
They cut through the duct tape.
I have changed the fuse, so that there is power going to the board and the panel.
The control panel is IntelliSence. There is no number or any other sing on it.

Thank you all very much for your help

You won't get compensation as it wasn't their fault. If you knew it was there - why didn't you say so? Who fitted the alarm? You? If not - then who?

If you do a Mickey Mouse job and it gets damaged then that's your fault - no-one elses.

Joe, I have pointed out the relevant act of parliament to you purely and simply to help you to understand how this is seen in law. You, yourself suggested in one of your own posts that the carpet fitter should be sued. This is why I congratulated you on your excellent post. I am no longer into giving sarcastic comments, I've made my play on that and it can work if moderators looked at this site with a keen eye, so I shall go no further with the remaining comments in your last post. Suffice to say that 'yes, I am on drugs' and thanks for your interest in my welfare.

Thankyou once again for your most excellent and eye-opening comments, I am very proud of you.

Best Wishes
