all lights flickering.

hi there,hope someone can help me with this.
all the lights in the house started flickering last night,and there was a buzzing coming from the kitchen light switch.
I`ve checked the switch visually,all seems to be ok (no loose wires,all connections seem ok)
I`ve had lights back on for an hour today and they seem ok,but they`re currently off at the CU while I try to figure this out,any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it a dimmer switch?

If, as you say, all connections are tight, is it old and worn out?

When you turn that one off, are all the other lamps OK?

hi

no. it`s not a dimmer.it`s a new (fitted 3 months ago) stainless steel switch.
son now tells me the following:
1) when he turned kitchen switch on last night it turned on room light.
2) room switch did not work last night
3) top and bottom landing lights then failed to work,before coming on a couple of minutes later.

sorry to pose more problems but he`s just come in and told me all this.

Sounds like a loose connection at the ceiling rose, if it affects lamps in the hall and landing. This is because the lighting circuit runs from one ceiling rose to the next (unless you have a LOT of wires behind the switch).

When you say "room light" you mean the kitchen light? Is it just a single lamp?

no i mean lounge light.kitchen switch turned on light in lounge.lounge light is a triple spot and kitchen light is a 4 spot halogen (direct to mains,no transformer in circuit)

Ceiling rose. Most likely the kitchen one. Loose connections moving about with heat from the lamp coming on. Have a look in "for reference" for diagrams of lighting circuit connections.

If any of them them have been recently fitted or changed, check that one first. If you take any wires out of their connections, note carefully where they go first, and mark them if necessary.

thanks for that mate.both light fittings have been fitted in the past 6/12 months (simply swapped on a like for like basis) so i`ll check them for loose connections.
