Some scum set fire to my hedge the other evening, i reported it to the police who "crimed it up" as Arson not endangering life. If you look at the pics below, there are two attempts to cause a fire one of them right next to a carport in which i have my car and quite a lot of timber (being a DIYer). You can see my house too just behind.

Am i wrong to feel annoyed that they've said "not endangering life"? It was done after 11:30pm on a Sat night and me, my wife and three kids were all in bed.

The sargeant said "you didn't have to climb out of the window did you?"

I would say clearly an attempt to set fire to your carport

But then writing this down would have been more paperwork for the police and a more serious crime statistic.

dont worry over it. it makes no real difference what it gets crimed as. the police will crime it at the lowest crime if there is no offender. If they got caught they would be extremly unlikely to be charged with arson with intent to endanger life. I undersatnd your feelings, but looking at it i understand (speaking as an ex-copper) how and why theyve crimed it as that.

If an offender was arrested for this Arson , He/She/They would have been charged with the more serious offence of Arson with intent.

In law there can also be an element of recklessness when the fire was started. Your case undoubtedly fits the more serious offence but - at present your local Bill have an undetected lower level arson rather than the more serious offence which requires more resource input. i.e - Forensics, CID involvement etc.

I wouldn't blame them - blame the Home Office who impose totally unrealistic counting rules on the Police.

Have you had any other incidents - major or minor - which may indicate hate crime - or someone with a grudge?

Toptec, thank-you, probably the most useful comments i've heard on the matter thus far....
Nothing directed at me or my family.... i think it was a one off... i just feel strongly that it endangered the lives of my family and the bobbies said it wasn't..

ColJack... i felt it was a different question albeit on the same subject matter.... but thanks for pointing it out

but the more i think about this..... this c**t sets fire to a fuse attached to my house... and i have to prove they wanted to harm me.... whereas i set off in my car with 8 pints of lager in me, not wanting to harm a fly (not that i would), and they'd throw the book at me....

i feel right now like someone has shot a gun at me and missed... but the police are saying that as it missed it wasn't aimed at you.. !
i'm gonna have to find this scum myself.....

Just one more point, that won't provide you with any comfort I know.

IF the Police get their man, and he is convicted of arson, whether it is the lessor offence or not - he is very unlikely to get anything other than a Community Service Order. Unless he has a previous history of Criminal Damage.

I wouldn't go down the road of sorting this out yourself, that road can be paved with madness.

I would get a cheap camera and put it on the eave of your house, or provide better lighting there. Call out the local Crime Prevention Bobby and encourage him to help.

Toptec, you may have noticed the time of my last post... my judgement was a little 'impaired' i won't hunt this person down, however, if i catch them at it, that's a different matter.

Cameras on order... and as soon as the local bobby has been round (he's still on his hols i'm told), then the hedge is history anyway.

Happy new year

hello there.
m8 i think you are being a touch paranoid.
lads burn stuf cos they're dickhead young-uns. they do not think about the danger, upset or consequences of their actions.

i fully understand why your're upset but i think that you will be better off thinking the kids were knob heads rather than killers..

promise i mean this well m8. that beered up feeling you had does not go away and will surface again if you 'stay' upset.
better to make your car port safe and think of the 'bush burners' as naughty kids.

only thinking of how you feel m8
good luck

Thanks for the comments AtoZ.

That 'beered up' feeling was an extreme one, i was very beered up.

And i was very careful not to call anyone a 'killer'.... i don't believe anyone intended to kill me or my family. My issue is that the police say it didn't endanger life, whereas i strongly believe it did.

Villians should be made to pay for what the crime could have caused, which in this case is multiple deaths of totally inconnent people, so in my estimation the b*****ds should be found rounded up and gassed, too much mamby pamby attitude is whats turned this country into a pile of inbred ****e.

If someone stabs me I dont take into my head that they only wanted to nick me, I take it they wanted to kill me, if they fail it is irrelavent, it's their knife, their decision to stick it into me so they should pay the ultimate price of what the absolute outcome could be, my death, the fact that the ambulance people saved me doesn't count in my veiw.
