A client of mine is having a camper van imported from America, which obviously uses 110V. What's the best way of converting this van to allow it to be connected it our 230V supply? Would a site transformer sufice?

BTW, he want's to retain 110V internally to the built in appliances and lighting whilst having some new 230V sockets for tv etc..

There are specialist power supplies for caravans/motor homes, have you tried a google search?

Have had a look, but am unable at the moment to get decent results. Most of the ones that I have found are 230v to 12v - what I am after is a 230v to 110v (approx 4KVA)

Go to site Motorhome facts, there is an RV section, ask the question, somebody is sure to be able to give you info you need.

A site transformer will do the job but you will need to modify it a bit and do quite a bit of wiring work.

first job is to modify the site transformer, open it up and remove any earth wires that go to the transformer itself (they will probablly be potted in resin so just make the ends safe after they leave the resin). Then connect a flex to the output side of the transformer and bring it out of the case using a gland to restrain it. Also remove the plug from the transformer. This gives you a transformer where both sides are floating.

next you need to find the changeover switch that selects between landline power and generator power and remove it.

then fit a four pole supply changeover switch and wire things up per the following diagram
