I personally feel I owe no one a single penny and likewise the UK....

I am very much a self-made man, making my own fortune, but with the usual nurturing from the government and my parents. I inherited, not a single penny, on my parent's deaths....

Looking back in history, many of the UK's working people were likewise oppressed, and my own ancestors were certainly part of that oppression, not much better, or different from slavery. Do I feel I'm in need of reparation - no, not at all, it's just how things were, back then. I was born, and lived my early life in a back to back, with little in the way of facilities - no hot water, no bath, the only means of cooking a coal fired range in the living room. No car, until much later, we walked, or used public transport and basically struggled. I always remember there was a pensioner who lived opposite us, crippled, living alone. He couldn't afford electric light, he used a little paraffin lamp. I would run errands for him, to the shop, his treat, was a couple of ounces of cheese, for a few pence.

The only thing I took with me, was a decent education, a can do attitude, a firm desire to get on, and succeed. I spent 45 years, earning what I own. I feel I did good - I live where I want to live, in a comfortable, warm home, with all the facilities I ever wanted. Why might anyone feel I owe anyone else a living, or any reparations?

Did you manage to buy a council house at half price?

I don't think we owe anyone a single god dam penny - but brace yourself, our current wokey virtue signalling gov will be chomping at the bit to do so.

So that is your logic for not paying reparations?

The oppression of UK working people?

That was done by those in the UK...

But the UK oppressed and exploited people from many other countries...

A big difference!

current wokey virtue signalling gov
Please could you provide an example of this.

Maybe you think giving Junior Drs a fair pay rise was “woke”

Maybe you think stopping the farming IHT loophole that allowed billionaire Dukes and foreign investors to avoid tax is “virtual signalling”

Not a penny due.
How am I responsible for what my ancestors did 300-400 years ago???
I'm not even responsible for what my parents might have done wrong in their life, so why should I be paying for things I haven't done?
Think about it: if your parents have £1million debt and they die, are you responsible to pay it back?
No.
So why would you be responsible to pay back something that someone you don't know did centuries ago?
Can I get money out of the Germans for taking my grandfather prisoner and bomb my town?
No.
So, please, stop this nonsense because it can badly backfire.
Let's not forget that the people of Africa were (and in some places still are) enslaved by other Africans from different tribes or even their own, well before the whites got there.

I want reparations from the descendants of Vikings, Roman, Norman, Anglo Saxons who invaded this country.

Where do I send my bill?

Silly argument, as is we have come to expect..

People from other countries, exploited people from the UK. Way back, many were kidnapped to slavery, from the Cornish coast. It was what it was, back then. How far back do you want to go, with your silly ideas of reparations?

The point is, that looking back in history, almost everyone's historical relatives have suffered in the past.

The difference for me is not the individual oppression of people, but I'm no fan of the empires happenings, or previously, or indeed other countries doing similar things , but the plundering of the wealth of any country that has stopped that country improving its standards and ability to improve does have some merit.

Now, how you assess that, and how far back you go is difficult and even then won't correct anything.

Take a modern day situation, Ukraine. Assuming it ends soon, are they not entitled to anything from Russia for their financial, infrastructure and people losses ?

I really don't think it's a simple yes or no every time. Each case has to be assessed on its merits.

Which doesn't mean I think we have to say yes to everything.

Not that many years ago, Germany, near completely destroyed much of Europe, and caused millions of deaths, and for a second time, did they, could they ever make reparations for that?

So nothing needed ?

No actual punishment for invading another country ?

Germany was overpowered and surrendered, I think that's unlikely to be the outcome for Ukraine and Russia.
