With the silly season for fireworks nearly on us, when birds and animals, both domestic and wild, are scared s**tless with explosions, I must ask "where are the animal rights activists". I presume they are not interested as they cannot trash some private property for this. (and they probably want their own fireworks party)

Bit of a random thread :? Has anything in particular raised your hackles?

Quite happy to get our own back on the cats that sh*t in our garden, although we have our display at new year...

Normal fireworks designed to make a colourful display in the night sky don't really upset our pets. It's the ones designed to cause as much noise as possible that are the problem.

Why they don't ban fireworks that make a loud boom, I can't fathom. People have no consideration when they let them off, and cause disturbance to the small hours.

Sale of fireworks should also be limited to a few days before Nov 5th and New Year's, and not sold at other times. No need for a total ban, just control the noise output and opportunities to buy them.

It makes more sense to have properly organised professional displays instead of the paltry affairs that go on in back gardens. As such, banning the sale from the general public would seem the order of the day.

Yes, that's one way of tackling the problem. I would still rather control the situation rather than a ban. I think once you take away the fireworks that are designed to make excess noise, then they will lose their appeal to people who use them irresponsibly. Wouldn't necessarily want to stop a family enjoying the fireworks at home that just make a display.

The best home fireworks we ever had were tabletop ones - mount vesuvius pouring out some strange plastic foam thing, a small sparkler of varying lights etc. Can you still get them?

As whitespirit says, there is absolutely no need for noisy fireworks - if you really like that sort of thing, take a plane to Syria

Wouldn't want people having fun would we...and ours is certainly not a 'paltry affair'...lol

Sure there are some idiots who cause problems, but they are a small minority..

And since the latest round of legisalation injuries are well down...in fact the majority of injuries occur at public displays!

Of course if all the cat owners stopped them sh*ting in our garden every day of the year, maybe I'd reconsider our 20mins a year of noise and colour...

Nah, on second thoughts what's the point...the far more numerous public displays cause far more noise, and yet somehow they are ok?

These pop-up shops (or whatever they're called) that exist for a month or so, selling fireworks to anyone whatsoever; where do they get their supplies from? Surely manufacturers have a duty of care to check the licence of potential vendors of their wares?
