Here's a silly question, or maybe not. Do animals know when they are going to die ? Elephants seem to know, the reason I ask is my little girls hamster has just died, RIP snowy  I found it in it's bed, not on the floor/wheel etc.. so do they know ?

it had a bed?....a real bed?

I think they do.....my cats seem to know when I'm not well....and they seem to sense when another of their 'housemates' is ill...stands to reason they would know if they weren't long for this world....except mebbe in traffic

Similar happened to us, 'tho not from underground, but from comfy little box placed in airing cupboard !! The buqqer was alive even having been a cold, stiff little furball !
:D

I doubt they are conscious of their own mortality, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be aware that they feel very ill, and (like people), want to lie down somewhere dark and quiet. Sometimes (like people) they will get better, and sometimes (like people) they won't.
