Hi all,

I really need some advice!

My outside tap is spurting out water with a lot of force at the joint of the pipe. I have turned the mains water off and my central heating and have put duct tape around the joint. I have called a plumber, but he can only come out in the morning.

The question I want to know is can I turn my central heating on without turning the mains water back on? I have a Gloworm Hideaway boiler, it is pretty old I think and stands on the floor. I have never had it serviced and really don't have much clue. But its only me and the kids here and I'm worried the boiler may explode or something if I put it on without the mains water being on. I have no manuals for it so don't know much more about it :(

The other thing is that on the control panel, you can't turn the central heating switch on independently of the hot water, they both seem to have to come on, I don't know if this makes any difference.

I have tried looking on the internet but got all confused :?

So any advice for tonight would be great until plumber is here in the morning, as I'm not really looking forward for us to spend the night without central heating!

Thanks

Kate

you can leave the central heating on. You'll also have a limited supply of water for washing to your bathroom from the tank in the loft.

Yes you can turn the heating on, no problem.
Unfortunately your duct tape won't work although its a gallant attempt!
I bet all you really wanted was your own sKate-ing rink. Sorry

Well thank you very much for your responses, that has put my mind at ease.

I will definately get the boiler serviced, I have not long moved in so will now be top priority.

You might like to ask your plumber to install an isolating valve inside the house, to shut off the supply to the outside tap in winter. This will help prevent it freezing up in the future
