that they rent out privately? They seem blooming expensive (£300+ for a couple of days)

I've got this growing desire to explore the canals around Manchester (and not just the ship one). Whaddya think to hiring/buying a cheap boat with a motor, pay for the licence to use the canals, and doing a bit of bivvying?

Do you know what the 3k a year mooring fees were used for Kevin? Seems very expensive just to tie up a boat. mine cost £20,000 to build and a further £10,000 to fit out 70ft boat with 35ft of cabin back in 1984 sold it in 1998 for 23k when mooring fees went to £3k a year.
